How to Design Procedural Eurorack Synthesiser Faceplates Using Midjourney and Figma Weave

Combine the hyper-detailed textures of generative art with the strict millimeter measurements of modular synthesiser faceplates using this hybrid creative pipeline.

Updated 10/7/2026

Designing hardware is hard. Designing Eurorack modular synthesiser faceplates is harder. To build a great module, you have to operate at a bizarre intersection of disciplines: you need the gritty, industrial aesthetic of electronic music hardware, but you must also conform to unforgiving physical measurements. A single misplaced 3.5mm jack or a potentiometer hole that is off by 0.5 millimetres means your custom panel won't fit into a standard Eurorack case, or worse, your knobs will scrape against each other.

Traditionally, hardware designers are forced to choose between boring, utilitarian CAD layouts or spending dozens of hours painstakingly wrapping custom vector artwork around physical drill holes in Illustrator.

There is a faster, more inspiring way. By pairing /platforms/midjourney generative textures with the precise structural layout tools in /platforms/figma-weave, you can design gorgeous, professional, ready-to-fabricate Eurorack faceplates in under an hour.

Step 1: Prompting Midjourney for Industrial Vector Textures

Our goal in Midjourney is not to generate a finished faceplate with pre-rendered knobs and jacks. If you prompt Midjourney with "Eurorack module design," it will output beautiful but completely useless mockups with warped jacks and nonsensical labels.

Instead, we want Midjourney to generate the background graphic asset—a high-contrast, industrial, sci-fi, or brutalist texture that we can vectorise and slice into standard physical dimensions.

When writing your prompts, use keywords that imply flat, high-contrast design. Avoid perspective depth. Here are a couple of excellent prompt formulas to start with:

> Prompt 1 (Brutalist Electronic): minimalist brutalist flat graphic layout, circuit board patterns, high contrast black and white vector art, industrial screen print, technical schematic lines --ar 1:2 --style raw --v 6.0

> Prompt 2 (Retro-Futurist Space): 1970s soviet space probe dashboard, flat vector graphic pattern, control panel screenprint pattern, black and cream color scheme, industrial knurled textures --ar 1:3 --style raw --v 6.0

Using the --ar (aspect ratio) parameter is crucial here. Eurorack faceplates are tall and thin, measured in Horizontal Pitch (HP). A 1:2 or 1:3 ratio maps perfectly to standard Eurorack formats like 8HP, 10HP, or 12HP.

Step 2: Extracting and Vectorising the Graphics

Once you have generated an image you love, you need to clean it up before bringing it into Figma. Because Midjourney outputs raster files (PNGs), they cannot be sent straight to a laser cutter or a PCB milling machine.

  1. Upscale your chosen image in Midjourney to get the highest resolution possible.
  2. Open your image editor of choice and run a quick threshold or high-contrast filter to separate your designs into solid blacks and whites.
  3. Run the image through a vectoriser (such as Vectorizer.ai or the image trace tool in your favourite vector application). This converts the textures into clean paths that can be scaled infinitely without pixelation.

If you run into issues with blurry trace results or want to see examples of clean vector conversions, you can check out the troubleshooting guides at our /platforms/midjourney/articles.

Step 3: Structuring the Plate in Figma Weave

With your vector pattern ready, open /platforms/figma-weave. This is where we apply the strict engineering math. Eurorack height is standard: 3U height is exactly 128.5mm. Width is measured in HP, where 1HP is exactly 5.08mm (0.2 inches).

To make this easy, let us set up a 10HP panel template (which translates to 50.8mm wide by 128.5mm high).

  1. Create a frame with the exact dimensions: 50.8mm x 128.5mm.
  2. Place mounting holes at the standard positions. For a 3U panel, mounting holes should be centered 3.0mm from the top and bottom edges, and 7.5mm in from the left and right edges. The standard hole size for Eurorack M3 screws is 3.2mm.
  3. Import your vectorised Midjourney texture as a layer inside this frame. Mask it so it sits perfectly within the panel boundaries.

Now, use Figma Weave's procedural layout tools to align your components. Let us assume your module has three control potentiometers and four 3.5mm patch jacks:

  • Potentiometer holes: Typically require a 7.2mm drill hole to accommodate standard Alpha 9mm pots.
  • Jack holes: Typically require a 6.1mm drill hole for standard Thonkiconn 3.5mm jacks.

Using Weave, set up a vertical grid system. This ensures that even with a highly chaotic, organic Midjourney graphic running in the background, your physical interfaces are perfectly spaced, symmetrical, and ergonomically sound.

Step 4: Exporting for Fabrication

Once you have layered your technical layout over your Midjourney graphic, group your layers into three distinct categories:

  1. DRILL_HOLES: Your mounting screws, jack holes, and potentiometer holes (usually exported as a simple black vector path on a transparent background).
  2. SILKSCREEN_PRINT: The graphic background pattern and text labels.
  3. BOARD_OUTLINE: A single rectangle matching the exact 50.8mm x 128.5mm bounds, set to a 0.1mm stroke.

Export these layers as an SVG or DXF file. If you are ordering custom aluminium panels from a specialist fabrication service like Front Panel Designer, or if you are printing them on FR4 (circuit board material) via cheap PCB prototyping services like JLCPCB, these vector layers are exactly what their machinery needs.

By blending generative, chaotic art with strict, industrial component grids, you get the absolute best of both worlds: modules that look like they were recovered from a crashed alien spacecraft, built to tolerances that sit perfectly in your studio rack.
