What it is best at
ChatGPT is the default drawer of the AI world. It is the model most people reach for first because it is genuinely competent at almost everything: drafting, summarising, code, data wrangling, image generation, voice, and browsing the live web. GPT-class models are strong reasoners with a huge tool surface around them — Code Interpreter for running Python on your files, Custom GPTs for repeatable workflows, and an API that most of the industry has already built adapters for.
Where it pulls ahead
Breadth and ecosystem. If a tool, plugin, SDK or tutorial exists for any model, it exists for OpenAI first. For engineering work the combination of strong code generation, function calling and mature SDKs makes it the safest default for production systems. Voice mode is also the most natural of any mainstream assistant.
Honest trade-offs
Long-form prose can read flat and over-hedged next to Claude, and it is more prone to confidently filling gaps rather than saying it does not know. Image generation is convenient but not in Midjourney's league aesthetically. Usage limits shift without much notice, and the sheer number of model variants makes it hard to know which one you are actually talking to.
Reach for it when
You want one tool that does eighty percent of everything, you are building software on top of a model, or you need file analysis and live web results in the same conversation.
