Midjourney v6 vs Ideogram 2.0 vs DALL-E 3 for Print-Ready Packaging Typography: Which Generator Handles Label Copy Best?
We put the three leading image generators head-to-head on a brutal packaging design challenge. Here is which model actually respects your copy and which outputs runic gibberish.

The Packaging Design Bottleneck
For a long time, using AI image generators for professional packaging design followed a predictable, frustrating workflow. You would prompt an engine for a high-fidelity bottle, jar, or box mockup, get a gorgeous visual back, and then spend the next two hours in Adobe Illustrator photoshopping out the terrifying, alien-language gibberish that passed for "text."
With the arrival of Midjourney v6, DALL-E 3, and the highly focused Ideogram 2.0, the landscape has changed. All three claim they can render legible, sharp English typography directly onto complex 3D surfaces. But packaging typography is a brutal test suite: it requires not just spelling words correctly, but managing hierarchy, wrap-around perspectives, and font styling that matches the brand's identity.
We put all three engines through a standardised, real-world packaging test to see which model actually delivers production-ready labels and which ones fall apart under pressure.
The Test Prompt: The Craft Soda Label
To keep things fair, we bypassed simple flat graphic prompts and went straight for a complex, mock physical product. We used the following prompt across all three platforms:
> "A premium glass bottle of craft soda on a minimalist wooden table. The bottle features a matte paper label with elegant, clean typography. The main brand text reads 'WILD ELDERFLOWER' in a bold serif font. Below it, in a smaller sans-serif font, it reads 'Zero Sugar | Crafted in Gloucestershire'. The label has a dark forest green background with delicate white botanical illustrations. Photorealistic, soft natural lighting."
Here is how each platform performed when we peeled back the hood to see what makes these model architectures tick.

1. Ideogram 2.0: The Typography Specialist
Ideogram has carved out a niche as the designer's darling, specifically because of its focus on spatial layout and letter rendering. While it lacks the sheer raw compute scale of its competitors, its bespoke typography engine is highly optimised for text-heavy layouts.
The Output Quality Ideogram 2.0 handled the challenge with striking precision. It printed "WILD ELDERFLOWER" flawlessly, maintaining even kerning between the letters—a notoriously difficult task for diffusion models. The secondary text, "Zero Sugar | Crafted in Gloucestershire," was rendered in a clean, legible sans-serif font that actually aligned to the curve of the glass bottle.
The Catch While the typography was practically vector-ready, the actual background illustration and environmental lighting felt slightly flatter compared to its rivals. It looks more like a high-end 3D render than a warm, organic photograph. However, if your primary goal is layout accuracy and spelling fidelity, Ideogram is the clear industry leader.

2. Midjourney v6: Aesthetic Mastery, Spelling Roulette
Midjourney is the undisputed king of atmospheric rendering, lighting, and rich, organic textures. When you prompt it for a glass bottle, you don't just get a bottle; you get realistic glass refraction, condensation droplets, and stunning volumetric light. But how does it handle complex, multi-layered text?
The Output Quality Midjourney's rendition was visually breathtaking. The forest green matte label had a tactile, textured paper quality, and the botanical illustrations looked hand-drawn by a professional printmaker. It rendered "WILD ELDERFLOWER" correctly on three out of four variations.
The Catch Where Midjourney struggled was the secondary text. "Zero Sugar | Crafted in Gloucestershire" became a tragic mess of "Zero Sguar | Crfated in Gloucestershe." The letters were beautifully styled and matched the organic aesthetic, but the engine simply could not handle that many characters on a curved plane without hallucinating letters.
If you are using Midjourney v6 on /platforms/midjourney, the best workflow remains generating the atmospheric mockup first, then wiping the text using inpainting or manual compositing in Photoshop.

3. DALL-E 3: The Compliant, Flat Illustrator
Integrated directly into ChatGPT and the OpenAI API suite, DALL-E 3 is the most accessible of the trio. It is famous for its strict adherence to complex prompts, thanks to its native understanding of natural language instruction.
The Output Quality DALL-E 3 followed the prompt instructions to the letter. It successfully included all requested copy: "WILD ELDERFLOWER," "Zero Sugar," and "Crafted in Gloucestershire." It even placed the pipe character (|) exactly where instructed.
The Catch The visual execution, however, was underwhelming. DALL-E 3 has a persistent habit of rendering images with a glossy, hyper-saturated, slightly "plastic" feel. The bottle looked like a 3D asset from a mobile game rather than a premium craft product. The typography, while spelled correctly, lacked typographic elegance—relying on generic, blocky sans-serifs that felt out of place on a high-end bottle.
If you are generating assets via /platforms/openai, DALL-E 3 is excellent for rapid prototyping and getting the layout concept approved, but it is rarely suitable for final client-facing mockups without serious post-processing.

The Verdict
Your choice depends entirely on where you are in your design pipeline:
- Choose Ideogram 2.0 if you want to export an image that can be shown directly to a client with minimal edits. Its ability to handle hierarchical text on curved physical packaging is unmatched.
- Choose Midjourney v6 if you are after a premium, atmospheric mood board or campaign imagery where the vibe of the brand matters more than the literal spelling of the small-print ingredients.
- Choose DALL-E 3 for quick, internal layout ideation where you need to test copy placement quickly before committing to a manual design build.
