Anthropic API Key Not Found Python Error Fix

Updated 9/4/2026

Running into an "anthropic.AuthenticationError: No API key found" or similar initialization error is one of the most common issues when setting up the Claude API in Python. By default, the Anthropic Python SDK looks for a specific environment variable named ANTHROPIC_API_KEY. If this variable is missing, incorrectly named, or inaccessible within your running script's environment, the SDK initialization will fail.

This guide walks through step-by-step solutions to ensure your Python script can successfully authenticate with the Claude API.

1. Set the Environment Variable Correctly The recommended way to authenticate is by setting an environment variable on your operating system. This keeps your API key secure and prevents you from hardcoding sensitive credentials into your source code.

On macOS and Linux: Open your terminal and run the export command. Replace your actual key with the placeholder below: ```bash export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="your-api-key-here" ``` To make this persistent across terminal sessions, add the line above to your shell profile file (such as `~/.bashrc`, `~/.zshrc`, or `~/.bash_profile`), then reload the profile: ```bash source ~/.zshrc ```

On Windows (Command Prompt): ```cmd set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="your-api-key-here" ```

On Windows (PowerShell): ```powershell $env:ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="your-api-key-here" ```

2. Load the Key Using Python-Dotenv If you are developing locally and prefer using a `.env` file, you must ensure your script explicitly loads the file before initializing the Anthropic client.

First, install the python-dotenv package: `bash pip install python-dotenv ` Create a file named .env in the root directory of your project: `env ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your-api-key-here ` In your Python script, load the environment variables at the very top of your file: `python import os from dotenv import load_dotenv from anthropic import Anthropic

Load environment variables from .env file load_dotenv()

Initialize the client (it will automatically look for ANTHROPIC_API_KEY) client = Anthropic() ```

3. Explicitly Pass the API Key If environment variables are not resolving due to deployment constraints (e.g., specific serverless configurations or container environments), you can pass the API key directly into the client constructor.

*Note: Avoid hardcoding the raw string in production code. Use an alternative configuration manager if possible.*

`python from anthropic import Anthropic

Pass the key explicitly to the constructor client = Anthropic( api_key="your-api-key-here" ) ``` If you are retrieving the key from a custom database or secret manager, store it in a local variable first, then pass it: ```python custom_key = my_secret_manager.get("CLAUDE_KEY") client = Anthropic(api_key=custom_key) ```

4. Verify Virtual Environment and IDE Settings If you have set the environment variable but your Python script still throws the error, your IDE or virtual environment may not be inheriting the system variables.

- VS Code / PyCharm: Restart your IDE after setting new system environment variables. IDE terminal instances often cache environment states. - Jupyter Notebooks: If running inside Jupyter, standard shell exports may not carry over. Run this directly inside a notebook cell to set the environment variable for that notebook session: `python %env ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your-api-key-here ` - Virtual Environments: Ensure you are running the script within the active virtual environment where your dependencies are installed, and that your run configuration in your IDE has "Include system environment variables" checked.

When to escalate If you have verified that the environment variable is loaded, verified it prints correctly via `os.environ.get('ANTHROPIC_API_KEY')`, but you still receive authentication or handshake failures, the key itself may be disabled, deleted, or lack sufficient permissions. Log into the Anthropic Console, navigate to the API Keys section, and generate a new key to test. If new keys also fail, check the Anthropic status page or contact Anthropic Support via the Console.
