How to Fix Claude API 403 Forbidden Error
Updated 9/18/2026
An HTTP 403 Forbidden error from the Anthropic Claude API indicates that your API key is syntactically valid (otherwise you would receive a 401 Unauthorized error), but the server is actively refusing to authorize the specific request you are making.
This error typically stems from account status issues, workspace permission misconfigurations, restricted geographic access, or attempting to access models that your account tier does not support. Follow these troubleshooting steps to identify and resolve the root cause.
1. Check Your Billing and Credit Balance An inactive or unpaid billing account is the most common cause of a 403 Forbidden error. If your balance drops to zero or your credit card payment fails, Anthropic may suspend your access.
- Log in to the Anthropic Console.
- Navigate to the Billing section.
- Check your remaining balance. If you are on a prepaid plan, ensure you have active credits.
- If you are on a postpaid plan, check for outstanding invoices or failed payment attempts.
- Update your payment method and purchase credits if necessary. It can take up to 10–15 minutes for your account status to update globally after a payment is processed.
2. Verify Your Geographic Location and IP Address Anthropic restricts API access in certain countries and regions. If you are attempting to connect from an unsupported location, or if your server's IP address is flagged, the gateway will return a 403 Forbidden error.
- Review Anthropic's official list of supported countries and regions.
- If your server is hosted in a cloud environment (e.g., AWS, GCP, or DigitalOcean), check the physical region of your hosting zone. Ensure the data center is located within an approved country.
- Disable any VPNs, proxies, or corporate firewalls that might route your API traffic through a restricted region.
- Test your connection locally using a standard curl command to determine if the issue is restricted to your hosting environment.
3. Check Workspace and API Key Permissions If you are operating within a team or enterprise organization, your specific API key may lack the permissions required to execute requests or access specific models.
- Open the Anthropic Console and navigate to the API Keys tab.
- Confirm that the API key you are using is active and has not been revoked or paused by an administrator.
- Verify if your workspace has restricted model access. If your organization has disabled access to certain models (such as Claude 3.5 Sonnet), using those model names in your code will trigger a 403 error.
- Generate a new API key within a different workspace if you suspect workspace-level permission issues, and swap it into your environment variables.
4. Confirm Model Entitlements and Tiers Certain high-performance or specialized models are restricted to specific usage tiers or legacy accounts. If you request a model that your tier cannot access, the API will reject the call.
- In your code, verify the spelling of the model parameter (e.g., claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022 or claude-3-opus-20240229).
- Check your current Evaluation or Build tier in the Anthropic Console settings.
- If you are trying to access beta features, ensure you have included the correct beta flags in your request headers (e.g., anthropic-beta: prompt-caching-2024-07-31).
When to Escalate If you have confirmed that your account has a positive credit balance, you are accessing the API from a supported region, and your API key works for basic curl requests but fails in production, contact Anthropic Support via the Console. Provide your Account ID, the specific API key ID (never send the actual secret key), the exact timestamp of the 403 error, and your server's hosting provider and region.
