Fix Claude API Missing Version Header Error
Updated 9/23/2026
When building integrations with the Anthropic API, you may encounter an error stating that the anthropic-version header is missing or invalid. Unlike many REST APIs that include versioning in the URL path, Anthropic enforces version control strictly through HTTP request headers. If this header is absent, the API rejects the connection with a 400 Bad Request or an invalid_request_error response.
This issue typically occurs if you are making direct HTTP requests without an official SDK, using an severely outdated library version, or routing your API traffic through a proxy or middleware that strips custom HTTP headers. Follow these steps to resolve the issue.
Step 1: Manually Inject the Version Header in HTTP Requests If you are calling the Anthropic API directly using tools like `curl`, `Postman`, or standard HTTP clients (such as Python's `requests` or JavaScript's `fetch`), you must explicitly define the `anthropic-version` header in your request configuration.
As of the current API release, the required version value is 2023-06-01.
Example using cURL: `bash curl https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages \ --header "x-api-key: your-api-key-here" \ --header "anthropic-version: 2023-06-01" \ --header "content-type: application/json" \ --data '{ "model": "claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022", "max_tokens": 1024, "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello, Claude"}] }' `
Example using Python Requests: `python import requests
url = "https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages" headers = { "x-api-key": "your-api-key-here", "anthropic-version": "2023-06-01", "content-type": "application/json" } data = { "model": "claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022", "max_tokens": 1024, "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello, Claude"}] } response = requests.post(url, headers=headers, json=data) print(response.json()) `
Step 2: Force-Update Your Anthropic SDK If you are using the official `@anthropic-ai/sdk` (TypeScript/JavaScript) or `anthropic` (Python) libraries, the SDK is designed to inject this header automatically. If you see this error while using the SDK, your installed package is likely outdated or corrupted.
Update your packages to the latest stable versions:
* For Python applications: `bash pip install --upgrade anthropic ` * For Node.js / TypeScript applications: `bash npm install @anthropic-ai/sdk@latest ` *(Or use yarn upgrade @anthropic-ai/sdk or pnpm update @anthropic-ai/sdk depending on your package manager)*
After updating, restart your development server or application process to ensure the runtime loads the updated package.
Step 3: Check for Middleware or Proxy Header Stripping If you are running your API calls through an intermediate server, API gateway (like AWS API Gateway, Kong, or Apigee), or a local reverse proxy (like Nginx), the proxy may be blocking or stripping custom headers.
- Check your gateway configuration to ensure it is configured to forward non-standard headers.
- Verify that anthropic-version is not being filtered out by a security policy or Web Application Firewall (WAF).
- If your gateway normalizes headers to lowercase, ensure your application handles this; however, the Anthropic API accepts anthropic-version in lowercase as per HTTP/2 standards.
Step 4: Manually Define the Version in SDK Initialization If you are using an SDK but need to override or guarantee the version header is sent, you can explicitly pass it during client initialization.
In TypeScript/JavaScript: `typescript import Anthropic from '@anthropic-ai/sdk';
const anthropic = new Anthropic({ apiKey: process.env.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, defaultHeaders: { 'anthropic-version': '2023-06-01' } }); `
In Python: `python from anthropic import Anthropic
client = Anthropic( api_key="your-api-key", default_headers={"anthropic-version": "2023-06-01"} ) `
When to escalate If you have updated your SDK, confirmed the header is present in your outgoing payloads, and verified that no local proxies are modifying the request, but you still receive a header error, check the Anthropic Status page to see if there is an ongoing deployment issue. If the status is clear, raise an issue on the official Anthropic SDK GitHub repository or contact Anthropic Support via your Developer Console.
