How to Fix Claude API Timeout Errors

Updated 9/18/2026

Timeout errors occur when the Claude API takes longer to process and return a response than your client application is configured to wait. These errors can manifest as ReadTimeout, ConnectTimeout, or standard HTTP client gateway timeouts (like 504 Gateway Timeout).

Because Claude models handle massive context windows, processing a large prompt with complex instructions can sometimes take longer than standard HTTP timeout defaults (often 10 to 30 seconds). Follow these steps to adjust your configuration and optimize your application flow.

1. Increase SDK Client Timeouts The default connection and read timeout values in many HTTP libraries and Anthropic's official SDKs are too short for large generation tasks. You must explicitly configure these limits in your code.

Python SDK Configuration When instantiating the `Anthropic` client in Python, set the `timeout` parameter. The default is typically 60 seconds, but for large inputs or complex reasoning tasks, you should increase this to 120 or 180 seconds.

`python from anthropic import Anthropic

Set a custom timeout of 120 seconds client = Anthropic( api_key="your_api_key", timeout=120.0 ) ```

TypeScript / JavaScript SDK Configuration In the TypeScript SDK, pass the timeout option (in milliseconds) inside the configuration object:

`javascript import Anthropic from '@anthropic-ai/sdk';

const anthropic = new Anthropic({ apiKey: 'your_api_key', timeout: 120 * 1000, // 120 seconds }); `

2. Implement Response Streaming Using streaming allows your application to receive output chunks progressively as they are generated by Claude, rather than waiting for the entire payload to finish. This prevents the connection from being terminated by intermediary load balancers or proxies due to inactivity.

  • Switch to standard streaming: Use client.messages.create(..., stream=True) in Python or stream() helper methods in TypeScript.
  • Handle event streams: Ensure your server-side architecture supports Server-Sent Events (SSE) so that the connection remains open and active throughout the generation lifecycle.

3. Reduce Input Context and Max Tokens Extremely large system prompts, combined with long chat histories or embedded documents (like PDFs), require significant processing time before the model can begin generating tokens. This pre-fill phase is a common source of read timeouts.

  1. Optimize your context: Trim redundant system instructions and remove unnecessary past messages from the conversation history.
  2. Limit target output: Lower the max_tokens parameter. A lower target output token count reduces the maximum possible duration of the connection.
  3. Utilize Prompt Caching: If you are repeatedly sending the same large context (like a book or codebase), enable prompt caching to speed up the pre-fill phase and avoid processing-related timeouts.

4. Check Intermediary Proxy and API Gateway Settings If your application runs behind an API Gateway (such as AWS API Gateway, Kong, or Nginx) or a corporate reverse proxy, these systems often have strict global timeout limits (often capped at 29 or 30 seconds) that override your SDK settings.

  1. Inspect your cloud architecture diagram to identify any load balancers or firewalls in the transit path.
  2. Increase the execution or read timeout settings of your API gateway to match your SDK (e.g., set gateway integration timeouts to 120 seconds).
  3. Check if your server is experiencing local DNS resolution delays, which can consume several seconds of the initial connection window.

When to Escalate If you regularly experience timeouts even after setting client limits above 180 seconds, streaming your responses, and verifying your local infrastructure, the issue may stem from an upstream service degradation. Check the official Anthropic status page. If the service is operational but your latency remains high, open a ticket via the Anthropic Developer Console, detailing your average prompt size, output token target, hosting region, and relevant traceroutes.
