Fix Claude Forgetting Messages in Long Chats

Updated 9/7/2026

If you are working on a long project or having an extended conversation with Claude, you might notice a sudden drop in its performance. It might forget instructions you gave it ten messages ago, ask you to repeat information you already provided, or completely ignore the guardrails you set at the beginning of the chat.

This behavior happens because of how Claude’s context window works. While Claude has one of the largest context windows of any AI model (up to 200,000 tokens for Claude 3 and 3.5), it does not have permanent memory. In very long chats, or when dealing with massive file uploads, the chat history eventually exceeds the maximum limit, causing Claude to drop older messages to process new ones.

How to fix Claude's memory loss in long chats

If Claude has started forgetting your earlier inputs, follow these troubleshooting steps to restore context and optimize your workflow.

1. Summarize and start a new chat When a chat thread gets too long, Claude has to process the entire history with every new message, which degrades its performance. Ask Claude to summarize the current state of your work: "Provide a concise summary of our project goals, decisions made so far, and the current code or text we are working on." Copy this summary, click "Start New Chat," paste the summary, and continue working.

2. Use Claude Projects to pin core files If you are a Claude Pro or Team user, avoid pasting the same reference documents into the chat repeatedly. Instead, use the "Projects" feature. Upload your codebase, style guides, or core data files directly to the Project knowledge base. This keeps the information permanently accessible to all chats within that project without consuming your active chat session's memory as quickly.

3. Consolidate your prompt instructions If you rely on a specific set of rules or formatting instructions, do not type them out incrementally across multiple messages. Consolidate them into a single, structured system prompt or a "System Prompt" block at the very start of a new chat to ensure they remain active throughout the session.

4. Remove heavy attachments from active chats If you uploaded a large PDF, CSV, or image file at the beginning of a chat, Claude must read that file again with every single message you send. If you no longer need to query that specific file, start a new chat without the attachment to free up processing space.

5. Reference previous points explicitly If Claude seems to lose track of a specific detail from a few turns back, do not assume it remembers. Prompt it directly: "Referring back to the database schema we defined in our third message, write the migration script."

Best practices to manage Claude's context limits

To prevent Claude from forgetting details in future sessions, structure your interactions to use tokens efficiently.

  • Keep it modular: Instead of writing an entire application or book in a single chat, break your task down into chapters or modules. Dedicated chats for "Authentication," "Database Setup," and "UI Design" work much better than one giant chat.
  • Clean up code blocks: If you are debugging code, do not paste your entire 1,000-line file if the error is only in a 20-line function. Only paste the relevant snippet.
  • Limit repetitive prompting: Avoid sending "Are you sure?" or "Check this again" repeatedly without adding new information. These short messages build up transaction history without adding useful context.

When to escalate

If Claude is forgetting information in brand new, short chats (under 3 or 4 messages), or if it fails to read files that are well under the size limit, there may be a platform-level issue with Anthropic's context processing.

  • Check the official Anthropic Status page (status.anthropic.com) to see if there is an active incident involving degraded model performance.
  • If the status is green but the issue persists across all new chats, contact Anthropic Support through the in-app help widget or by emailing support@anthropic.com.
