Claude Skipping Uploaded Files? How to Fix Missing Details

Updated 9/9/2026

When you upload files (such as PDFs, TXT, CSV, or DOCX) to Claude, the system parses the document content and appends it to your prompt context. However, users frequently find that Claude ignores entire paragraphs, overlooks specific data points, or claims information isn't in the file when it is.

This behavior is usually caused by parsing errors, attention loss (the "lost in the middle" phenomenon), or silent truncation due to token limits. Use the steps below to ensure Claude reads and processes every part of your uploaded files.

1. Verify and Clean the Document's Text Layer Claude cannot read raw images inside a PDF unless the file is processed correctly, and even then, visual parsing is prone to errors. If a PDF consists of scanned pages without an underlying text layer, Claude may miss large portions of it.

  • Check for selectable text: Open your file in a standard PDF viewer. Try to highlight and copy the text. If you cannot select the text, or if copying yields scrambled characters, Claude will not be able to read it reliably.
  • The Fix: Run the file through an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tool (like Adobe Acrobat or an online OCR converter) before uploading. Alternatively, export the document as a plain text (.txt) or Markdown (.md) file and upload that instead.

2. Reference Specific Sections with Structural Anchors Claude's attention can flag when reading very long files. If you ask a broad question like "Summarize this document," it will prioritize the beginning and end of the text. To force Claude to pay attention to specific parts, use structural anchors in your prompt.

  • Add page numbers or section titles: Tell Claude exactly where to look. For example: "Analyze the data presented specifically in Section 4.2 ('Financial Projections') on page 14 of the uploaded PDF."
  • Use keyword targeting: "Search the uploaded document for the term 'retention rate' and list every instance where it is discussed."

3. Segment Large Files into Smaller Uploads Although Claude has a massive context window, processing highly dense information in a single massive file can cause attention degradation.

  • If your document is longer than 50 pages or contains dense code, technical specifications, or financial sheets, split it into smaller files (e.g., Part_1.txt, Part_2.txt).
  • Upload the files one at a time, or upload them together and instruct Claude: "I have uploaded two files. First, analyze Part 1. Do not proceed to Part 2 until I tell you to. Confirm you have read Part 1 by summarizing its main goal."

4. Convert Tables and Data Sheets to Markdown or CSV Claude frequently struggles to parse complex PDF grid layouts, nested tables, and multi-column document formats. If Claude is ignoring data columns or rows, the parser has likely broken the visual layout into a continuous, scrambled string of text.

  • Do not upload raw spreadsheets or heavily formatted PDFs containing tables if you need precise calculations.
  • Convert your data tables into CSV format or a clean Markdown table.
  • Paste the Markdown table directly into the chat or upload it as a plain .txt file. Claude reads structured text data much more accurately than formatted document grids.

5. Check for Silent Token Truncation While Claude.ai supports large file uploads, the interface has a processing limit per message. If your uploaded files combined with your prompt exceed this limit, the system may silently truncate the files or refuse to process the latter half of the document.

  • Look at the attachment chips in the input box. If you see a warning icon or if the interface indicates the file is too large, the text has been cut off.
  • Reduce the file size by removing unneeded elements like high-resolution images, bibliographies, appendices, and duplicate formatting styles.

When to Escalate If Claude consistently ignores files that are small, cleanly formatted, and fully selectable, there may be an active bug in Anthropic's file processing pipeline. Check the Anthropic status page (`status.anthropic.com`) to see if there are active incidents regarding file uploads or processing. If the system is fully operational, try logging out, clearing your browser cache, or testing the upload in an Incognito window to rule out local browser extension interference.
