Claude Cut Off Mid Sentence: How to Resume Output

Updated 9/16/2026

It can be highly frustrating when Claude stops generating a response in the middle of a sentence, code block, or complex analysis. This issue typically happens because of output token limits, connection dropouts, or web interface rendering bugs.

Because Claude cannot automatically resume a frozen generation on its own without a prompt, you must guide the model to pick up exactly where it left off. Use this guide to recover cut-off text and structure your future prompts to avoid hitting these limits.

Why Claude Cuts Off Mid-Response

There are three primary reasons why Claude might stop generating text prematurely:

  1. Max Output Token Limits: Every LLM has a hard ceiling on how many tokens (roughly words) it can output in a single turn. For Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3 Opus, the limit is typically 4,096 or 8,192 output tokens. If your request requires a very long response, Claude will hit this wall and stop instantly.
  2. Network/Socket Timeouts: If your internet connection flickers for even a second, the server-sent events (SSE) stream that delivers Claude's response to your browser can break. The UI will display whatever was generated up to that micro-second and stop.
  3. Browser Tab Memory Issues: Long chats with heavy formatting, code blocks, or large rendered artifacts can cause the browser tab to run out of memory, freezing the output before it finishes rendering.

How to Resume a Cut-Off Response

If Claude stops in the middle of a generation, do not re-submit your entire original prompt. This will waste your message limit and likely result in another cut-off response. Instead, follow these steps to retrieve the rest of the generation.

Step 1: Use a Direct Continuation Prompt In the message box, ask Claude to resume from its last completed sentence or line of code. Do not just write "continue." Be specific to prevent the model from starting over from the very beginning.

*Copy and paste one of these prompts:* * For general text: "You cut off mid-sentence. Please continue generating your response, starting exactly from: '[insert the last 5-10 words Claude generated]'." * For code: "Your code block was cut off. Please continue writing the code, starting exactly from the line: '[insert the last line of code]'. Ensure you maintain the same variables and logic."

Step 2: Refresh the Page and Force a Render Sometimes the model has actually finished generating the response, but your browser stopped displaying it. 1. Refresh your web browser tab (`F5` or `Cmd + R`). 2. Scroll to the bottom of the chat. Often, the complete response will load from the cache once the page re-renders. 3. If using the desktop app, close the application completely, reopen it, and navigate back to the thread.

Step 3: Prompt in Chunks (Preventative Formatting) To avoid hitting the output token limit altogether, structure your prompt so Claude delivers the answer in phases. * Instead of: "Write a 3,000-word comprehensive guide on database optimization." * Use: "I want to write a comprehensive guide on database optimization. First, provide a detailed outline of the chapters. Once I approve the outline, I will ask you to write the chapters one by one."

Step 4: Constrain Output Formats If you are requesting code or highly detailed data tables, ask Claude to omit verbose explanations. This saves valuable output tokens for the actual content you need. * *Example prompt:* "Write the complete Python script to parse these log files. Do not include any introductory or concluding explanations. Provide only the code and inline comments."

When to Escalate

If Claude consistently stops generating after only 100 to 200 words, or if every single response fails with a blank screen or a "stream interrupted" warning, the issue is likely not a token limit.

Check the official Anthropic status page to see if there is an active incident affecting the API or web app. If the status page reports all systems operational, try disabling browser extensions (specifically ad blockers or script blockers) that might be interrupting the WebSocket connections used to stream Claude's output. If the problem persists across multiple browsers and networks, contact Anthropic Support via the chat widget in the bottom right corner of the Claude Help Center.
