How to Stop Claude From Truncating Code Files

Updated 9/4/2026

When using Claude for programming tasks, you may find that it cuts off mid-file, outputs incomplete blocks, or inserts lazy placeholders such as // ... rest of your code remains unchanged ....

This truncation is an intentional optimization behavior. Claude attempts to save output tokens and speed up generation times by only outputting what it assumes you need to see. However, when you need a complete, copy-pasteable script, this behavior is disruptive. Here is how to force Claude to output full code files.

1. Explicitly ban lazy placeholders By default, Claude's training encourages efficiency. To override this, you must set an explicit, aggressive negative constraint in your initial prompt. State clearly that placeholders are unacceptable.

Add this exact block to your prompt: `text Do not use any code placeholders, ellipses (...), or comments like '// rest of code'. You must output the entire file from start to finish, including all unchanged lines, imports, helper functions, and logic. Every single line of code must be fully written out. `

Specifying what *not* to do is often more effective than simply asking Claude to "write the whole file."

2. Structure request with XML formatting constraints Wrap your code generation instructions in structured XML tags. This isolates your structural rules from the logical programming instructions, making it harder for the model to overlook the formatting constraints.

Example prompt structure: `xml <task> Refactor the error handling in this Express middleware. </task>

<output_rules> 1. Output the complete, production-ready code file. 2. Do not omit any unchanged functions or configuration lines. 3. Ensure the code block is continuous and not broken into multiple sections. </output_rules> `

3. Manage token limit cutoffs (How to resume correctly) Claude has a maximum output limit (typically 4,096 or 8,192 output tokens depending on the model version). If you ask for a very long script, it may stop writing mid-sentence simply because it ran out of output capacity.

If Claude cuts off abruptly, do not simply type "continue" or "keep going." This often causes Claude to restart the generation from the beginning (and cut off again) or lose its tracking.

Instead, use this precise command: 1. Copy the last three lines of code that Claude successfully generated. 2. Type: *"You cut off due to token limits. Resume writing the code starting exactly from the line: [Insert last 3 lines]. Do not write any introduction or repeat the code you already wrote. Resume exactly where you stopped."*

This keeps the context seamless and prevents redundant token consumption.

4. Break files into modular requests If your code file is exceptionally long (exceeding 300–400 lines of complex code), it is highly likely to hit Claude's hard output limit. The most reliable fix is architectural: break your code down into smaller, modular components.

Instead of asking for a monolithic script, prompt Claude for individual modules: * *"Write only the database connection module."* * *"Now write the API endpoint handlers that import the database connection module."*

By keeping your code modular, you ensure that no single generation request approaches the model's physical output limit.

5. Configure Project custom instructions If you frequently write code with Claude, you can automate this behavior so you do not have to copy-paste constraints into every prompt: 1. Open your **Claude Project** on the web app. 2. Click on **Set custom instructions** in the right-hand menu. 3. Add this instruction: *"When writing code, always provide complete, production-ready files. Never abbreviate files with comments, placeholders, or ellipses."* 4. Click **Save**.

All subsequent chats inside this project will automatically inherit this instruction.

When to escalate If Claude refuses to write complete code blocks even for short scripts (under 100 lines), or if it repeatedly outputs blank code blocks, there may be a rendering bug with your web browser's markdown parser or a temporary API degradation. Try clearing your browser cache, disabling extensions that manipulate webpage scripts, or testing the prompt in a different browser. If the issue persists across different browsers and devices, submit a bug report via the feedback button within the Claude interface.
