How to Fix Slow Claude Response Times
Updated 8/20/2026
Why is Claude Responding So Slowly?
If Claude is taking a long time to begin generating a response (high Time to First Token) or if the text stream is lagging as it prints to your screen, the bottleneck is usually caused by context window saturation, browser resource exhaustion, or server-side queue congestion.
Every time you send a message in an existing chat, Claude has to reprocess the entire conversation history, including all uploaded files, previous prompts, and its own prior responses. When your chat history grows large, this processing (known as pre-fill) requires massive computational overhead, leading to noticeable delays before the model can generate a single new word.
1. Start a New Chat Session
The most effective way to restore immediate response speeds is to clear the active memory of your current session.
- Copy the critical points or the last working code block from your active thread.
- Click the "New Chat" button in the upper left corner of the interface.
- Paste the summarized context into the first message of the new thread.
Starting a fresh session reduces the active context window back to zero, allowing the system to process your prompt instantly without reading through megabytes of historical conversation.
2. Optimize and Trim Your Uploaded Files
Uploading large PDFs, text files, or raw codebases forces Claude to parse thousands of tokens before answering.
To speed up responses, do not upload raw, uncompressed files. Instead: - Copy and paste only the relevant snippets of code or text instead of uploading whole directories. - If you must upload a document, compress it by stripping out images, index pages, and formatting before uploading. - Limit file uploads to one or two per session. If you need to analyze a new file, start a fresh conversation rather than stacking files in an existing thread.
3. Clear Browser LocalStorage and Cache
Claude’s web application renders highly dynamic elements (such as Artifacts and markdown code blocks) directly in your browser. As your session grows, your browser's active tab memory increases, causing interface lag.
To clear the browser's memory buffer: 1. Click the lock icon in your browser's address bar next to the Claude URL. 2. Select "Site settings" or "Cookies and site data". 3. Click "Clear data" to purge local cache files and cookies. 4. Reload the page and log back into your Claude account.
This forces your browser to download a clean, updated version of the web app client, resolving local rendering bottlenecks.
4. Check for System-Wide Traffic Congestion
If starting a new chat does not improve generation speed, the issue may be server-side. During peak business hours (typically 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST), Anthropic's servers experience extremely high request volumes, which can lead to queued responses.
Open a new browser tab and navigate to status.anthropic.com to check the current system load. If you see "Degraded Performance" or high latency warnings for Claude.ai, the slowness is a global issue. You will need to wait for Anthropic to scale up server capacity or complete active maintenance cycles.
5. Disable Browser Extensions and Hardware Acceleration
Adblockers, translation extensions, and scripts that monitor web page changes can conflict with Claude’s WebSocket connection, causing delays in real-time text streaming.
- Open an Incognito or Private browsing window.
- Log into your Claude account and test the response speed.
- If performance improves, open your main browser's extension settings and disable third-party tools one by one until you isolate the extension causing the rendering delay.
- Ensure that "Hardware Acceleration" is enabled in your browser settings to allow your GPU to handle the rendering of long markdown trees.
When to Escalate
If Claude is consistently slow across multiple devices, networks, and brand-new chat sessions while the status page indicates all systems are fully operational, the issue might be localized to your account profile or subscription tier routing. Reach out to Anthropic Support via the in-app help beacon to report persistent latency issues.
