Why Is Claude So Slow in Long Chats? (How to Fix)

Updated 9/6/2026

As a Claude conversation grows longer, you may notice a significant drop in response speed. What started as a near-instantaneous interaction can turn into a 15-to-30-second wait for each turn.

This slowdown occurs due to how Large Language Models (LLMs) process information. To generate a coherent follow-up, Claude must re-read the entire history of the chat—including all previous prompts, responses, and uploaded documents—with every single message you send. This is called prompt processing. When the chat history spans tens of thousands of tokens, processing takes longer. Additionally, long chat interfaces can cause browser performance degradation due to heavy Document Object Model (DOM) rendering.

Follow these practical steps to diagnose, troubleshoot, and speed up your Claude chat experience.

1. Start a Fresh Conversation Thread The absolute fastest way to resolve latency is to click **"Start new chat"**.

When you start a new thread, you reset Claude's active memory to zero. The system no longer has to process thousands of words of history before responding to your new prompt. If you need to keep working on the same project, copy only the essential summary or the latest output of your work into the first prompt of the new thread.

2. Consolidate and Minimize File Attachments Every PDF, CSV, or code file you attach to a chat persists in that thread's memory. If you ask Claude five follow-up questions about a 50-page PDF, Claude processes that entire PDF five times.

  • The Fix: If you no longer need to reference an uploaded file, do not continue the chat. Start a new chat without the file. If you still need parts of the file, extract only the relevant pages or code snippets and paste them as plain text instead of re-uploading the entire document.

3. Leverage Claude's Prompt Caching (for API and Console users) If you are using the Anthropic Console or the API and experiencing slow responses on long system instructions or large files, ensure you are utilizing **Prompt Caching**.

Prompt caching allows Claude to "remember" large, static blocks of text (such as developer instructions or reference documents) without recalculating them on every turn. This reduces latency by up to 90%. * Structure your prompts so that static resources (system prompts, large tools, or document libraries) are placed at the very beginning of your API call and designated as cacheable.

4. Clear Browser Cache and Disable Heavy Extensions Sometimes the bottleneck is not Claude's servers, but your web browser trying to render a massive scrollback of text.

  • Open your browser's Developer Tools (F12) and check the CPU usage. If it spikes when typing in Claude, your browser is struggling.
  • Clear your browser's cache and cookies for claude.ai.
  • Temporarily disable browser extensions, particularly translation tools, grammar checkers (like Grammarly), or ad-blockers, which often intercept text areas and cause severe input lag in long web sessions.

5. Switch to a Faster Model If you are using Claude Pro or the Console, ensure you are utilizing the model best suited for your speed requirements.

  • Claude 3 Haiku is built specifically for near-instantaneous speed and low latency.
  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet offers a balanced speed profile.
  • Claude 3 Opus is the slowest and most resource-intensive model. If you are on Opus and experience lag, switching to Sonnet will instantly improve response times.

When to Escalate If you have started a brand new chat, cleared your browser cache, and a short 10-word prompt still takes over 30 seconds to get a response, the issue is likely a platform-wide outage or high traffic load.

Check the official, independent Anthropic status page at status.anthropic.com to see if there is active degraded performance or a major outage. If the status page shows green but the slowness persists across multiple browsers and devices, contact Anthropic Support through the resource center in the bottom-right corner of the Claude interface.
