Why Is Claude So Slow to Respond? Speed Fixes

Updated 9/5/2026

When Claude takes a long time to generate responses, or appears to hang indefinitely before replying, the issue is typically driven by one of three things: excessive conversation length, high network latency, or system-wide server congestion. Because Claude processes the entire history of a chat with every new message, long chats degrade performance significantly.

You can resolve and prevent slow response times by managing your session length, optimizing your prompt structure, and addressing local browser issues.

1. Start a New Conversation Thread The single most common cause of slow responses in the Claude web app is a bloated conversation history.

  • Claude must re-read every single previous message in the current thread before generating its next word.
  • If you have a chat containing thousands of words of text, multiple uploaded documents, or extensive code blocks, response times will increase exponentially.
  • Click the "Start new chat" button to clear the active working memory.
  • If you need continuity, summarize the key points from your old chat, paste that summary into the new chat, and continue from there.

2. Reduce the Size of Uploaded Files Uploading large PDFs, datasets, or massive codebases forces Claude to process millions of tokens. This heavy computation delays the start of the output generation (Time to First Token).

  • Instead of uploading a 200-page PDF, extract only the specific sections or chapters relevant to your current query.
  • If analyzing code, upload only the specific files or functions you are working on, rather than the entire repository.
  • Compress text files or convert them to plain .txt to strip out unnecessary formatting overhead.

3. Shift Usage Away from Peak Hours Like all cloud-hosted AI models, Anthropic’s infrastructure experiences heavy traffic during specific business windows.

  • Peak usage typically occurs between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM (EST and PST) on weekdays, as businesses around the globe run automated API tasks and active work sessions.
  • During these windows, server queuing can cause noticeable delays in both the web app and API outputs.
  • If possible, schedule large batch processing tasks, heavy data extraction, or complex coding sessions during off-peak hours (early mornings, evenings, or weekends).

4. Disable Browser Extensions and Clear Cache Sometimes the delay isn't on Anthropic’s servers, but rather in how your browser renders Claude's streaming output. Ad-blockers, script blockers, and translation extensions can interfere with the WebSocket connections used to stream text.

  • Try opening Claude in an Incognito / Private browsing window to see if performance improves.
  • Disable extensions that actively scan or modify web page elements (such as Grammarly, translation tools, or aggressive ad-blockers).
  • Clear your browser's cached files and cookies specifically for claude.ai, then log back in.

5. Switch to a Faster Model (For API/Console Users) If you are building an application or using the developer workbench and experiencing unacceptable latencies, evaluate which model you are querying.

  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet offers an excellent balance of speed and intelligence, but Claude 3 Haiku is built specifically for near-instantaneous responses.
  • If your task involves simple classification, routing, or basic formatting, switch your API calls to claude-3-haiku to drastically reduce latency and lower your token costs.

When to escalate If Claude remains extremely slow across completely new, short text chats in an incognito window, the issue is likely a server-side outage or severe capacity constraint. Check the official Anthropic Status page (`status.anthropic.com`) to see if there is an active incident report regarding "degraded performance" or API latency. If the status page reports all systems operational, but your premium account is consistently slow, contact Anthropic Support directly through the "Help" widget inside the web app portal.
