Fix Anthropic API Key Environment Variable Issues

Updated 9/15/2026

Why Does the "API Key Not Found" Error Occur?

When working with the official Anthropic SDKs (Python or TypeScript), the libraries are pre-configured to look for a specific environment variable: ANTHROPIC_API_KEY. If this environment variable is missing, misspelled, or incorrectly formatted, the SDK will throw an error such as AnthropicError: The ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable must be set or api_key is required.

This guide explains how to correctly configure your system and application environments to resolve this integration issue.

1. Verify the Variable Name Case and Spelling

Environment variables are case-sensitive in Linux, macOS, and standard shell runtime environments.

  1. Ensure that your variable is named exactly ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in all caps.
  2. Do not use common variations like CLAUDE_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_KEY, or API_KEY unless you are explicitly passing that specific variable into the SDK constructor manually.

2. Set the Environment Variable Correctly for Your OS

Setting a variable in a terminal session only persists for the lifetime of that specific terminal window. You must set it globally or configure your shell profile to make it permanent.

On macOS and Linux (Zsh / Bash): To configure the variable for your active shell, run: ```bash export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="sk-ant-api03-your-actual-key-here" ``` To make this change permanent so it persists across system restarts: 1. Open your terminal profile file (usually `~/.zshrc` or `~/.bash_profile`). 2. Add the line: `export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="sk-ant-api03-your-actual-key-here"` to the bottom of the file. 3. Save the file and reload the profile using `source ~/.zshrc` or `source ~/.bash_profile`.

On Windows (PowerShell / Command Prompt): In PowerShell (temporary session): ```powershell $env:ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="sk-ant-api03-your-actual-key-here" ``` To set it permanently via GUI: 1. Open the Windows Start Menu, search for "Edit the system environment variables," and open it. 2. Click **Environment Variables**. 3. Under **User variables**, click **New...**. 4. Enter `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` as the variable name and your raw key as the value. Click OK to save. 5. *Important:* Restart your IDE (VS Code, PyCharm, etc.) or terminal window for the change to take effect.

3. Configure Local Dotenv (.env) Files

If you prefer not to store global environment variables on your operating system, you can use local project configuration files. However, libraries do not load .env files automatically without helper packages.

In Python projects: 1. Create a file named `.env` in the root directory of your project (the same folder as your main script). 2. Add the key configuration: ```env ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-api03-your-actual-key-here ``` 3. Install the dotenv module: `pip install python-dotenv` 4. Load the variable at the absolute top of your main execution script before importing or initializing the Anthropic client: ```python from dotenv import load_dotenv import os from anthropic import Anthropic

load_dotenv() # This loads the variables from your .env file into os.environ

client = Anthropic() `

In Node.js / TypeScript projects: 1. Install the dotenv package: `npm install dotenv` 2. Load the configurations at the start of your code: ```javascript require('dotenv').config(); import Anthropic from '@anthropic-ai/sdk';

const anthropic = new Anthropic(); `

4. Fix IDE and Notebook Execution Issues

Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) like VS Code or PyCharm, and notebook systems like Jupyter, often fail to inherit environment variables set in external terminal sessions.

1. VS Code: If you are using launch configurations, define the variable inside your launch.json file: `json "env": { "ANTHROPIC_API_KEY": "sk-ant-api03-your-key-here" } ` 2. Jupyter Notebooks: Set the environment variable directly within the notebook block before running your SDK code: `python import os os.environ["ANTHROPIC_API_KEY"] = "sk-ant-api03-your-key-here" `

5. Configure Hosting and Cloud Environments

When deploying your application to cloud hosts like Heroku, Vercel, AWS, or Render, you must configure the environment variables inside the platform's settings dashboard rather than committing a .env file to git.

* Vercel: Navigate to Project Settings > Environment Variables. Add ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and input your token. Redeploy the project. * Heroku: Run heroku config:set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-api03-your-key-here from your CLI. * Docker: Pass the variable when running the container: docker run -e ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="sk-ant-api03-your-key-here" your-image-name

When to Escalate

If you have confirmed that your environment variable is visible to your runtime (for instance, by printing os.environ.get('ANTHROPIC_API_KEY') in Python and confirming it displays the correct string) but the SDK still throws initialization errors, check if you have multiple conflicting SDK installations or virtual environments. If you suspect an SDK-level bug, submit an issue on the official Anthropic SDK GitHub repository.
