Claude refusing a reasonable request or giving shorter answers

What's happening

Refusals and clipped answers are usually caused by ambiguous framing or an output limit, not a policy strike against you.

Fix it

1. Restate the request with the purpose and audience made explicit.
2. Break a large ask into smaller, concrete steps.
3. Ask Claude to explain what part of the request it cannot help with — the answer often reveals a one-word fix.
4. For truncated output, ask it to continue from the last line rather than regenerating.
5. Avoid asking for a full rewrite of very large files in one response; work section by section.
