How to Fix Figma Weave Gateway Timeout Error

Updated 10/8/2026

A gateway timeout error (typically represented as an HTTP 504 or 502 error) in Figma Weave indicates that an edge server or load balancer did not receive a timely response from the upstream servers processing your design data. In Figma Weave, this generally points to an infrastructure bottleneck, an overloaded background worker processing complex variables, or a disrupted websocket handshake.

While these errors are frequently caused by backend service disruptions on Figma's side, local network configurations, proxy servers, and corrupted browser state can also mimic or trigger gateway timeouts. Follow this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to isolate the cause and restore your Figma Weave connection.

1. Check Figma's Platform Status Before modifying any local settings, check if Figma is experiencing a platform-wide service degradation.

  1. Visit the official status.figma.com page.
  2. Look for incidents under Figma Design, Design Systems, or API and Developer Platform.
  3. Check the history log for recent incidents involving "latencies," "intermittent errors," or "variable resolution issues."

If the status page indicates an ongoing outage, the timeout is on Figma's infrastructure. In this case, local troubleshooting will not resolve the issue, and you must wait for Figma's engineering team to deploy a hotfix.

2. Force-Refresh and Clear Figma Session Storage Corrupted local storage keys can cause Figma Weave to continuously send invalid sync payloads, leading to gateway timeouts on repeated attempts.

  1. If using Figma in a browser, perform a hard refresh by pressing Ctrl + F5 (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (macOS).
  2. If using the Figma Desktop App, clear the cache manually:
  3. macOS: Go to Figma in the menu bar > Preferences > Clear Cache and Restart.
  4. Windows: Click the toggle menu > Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Cache and Restart.
  5. Alternatively, open your browser's Developer Tools (F12 or Cmd + Option + I), go to the Application tab, select Clear storage, and click Clear site data.

3. Disable Intercepting Proxies and VPNs Figma Weave relies on continuous, low-latency WebSocket connections and HTTP long-polling to sync real-time changes. Network security layers can block or delay these requests, triggering gateway timeouts.

  1. Disconnect from any active Corporate VPN, proxy server, or custom DNS configuration.
  2. Temporarily disable local security software, such as third-party firewalls or real-time web shields, which may inspect HTTPS payloads and delay transit.
  3. If you are on an enterprise network, ask your IT administrator to safelist the following domains:
  4. *.figma.com
  5. *.figma.space
  6. Standard secure WebSocket ports (wss:// on port 443).

4. Inspect the Browser Console for Upstream Failures Analyzing the exact network handshake can tell you if the 504 error is originating from Figma's CDN (e.g., Cloudflare) or Figma's internal gateway.

  1. Open your browser's developer console (F12) and navigate to the Network tab.
  2. Replicate the action in Figma Weave that triggers the gateway timeout.
  3. Locate the red-highlighted network request returning the 504 Gateway Timeout or 502 Bad Gateway status.
  4. Click on the request and inspect the Headers tab:
  5. If you see server: cloudflare, the cloud edge could not reach Figma's origin servers.
  6. If the header includes internal Figma tracing headers (like x-figma-trace or custom load balancer IDs) without Cloudflare branding, the request successfully reached Figma but died during database evaluation.

5. Simplify the Active Design File Extremely complex files—such as those containing thousands of nested variables, deeply recursive component structures, or massive JSON token blocks—can hit the internal execution limit of Figma Weave's processing nodes, resulting in a timeout error.

  1. Create a clean, blank Figma file.
  2. Attempt to initialize Figma Weave within this blank file.
  3. If the blank file loads and syncs instantly without gateway errors, the timeout is specific to your original file's complexity. You will need to break the target file down into smaller libraries or clean up unused variables.

When to escalate If the Figma Status page shows fully operational services, yet you continue to get gateway timeouts on multiple files and network connections, file a support ticket.

Export a HAR file from your Network tab showing the timeout and attach it to your request. Do not share raw authentication headers; purge sensitive tokens before submitting the HAR file to Figma Support.
