Gemini Down Right Now? How to Check Status & Fix

Updated 10/8/2026

Google Gemini is generally highly reliable, but server outages, API bottlenecks, and local browser conflicts can cause it to stop working entirely. If Gemini is stuck on a blank screen, won't load, displays 500/502/503 errors, or stops generating midway through a prompt, follow this troubleshooting guide to identify if the service is down and how to resolve local connection issues.

1. Verify if Gemini is actually down Before attempting complex troubleshooting steps, determine if the issue lies on Google's end. When Google's infrastructure experiences downtime, you will often see generic 500 (Internal Server Error), 502 (Bad Gateway), or 503 (Service Unavailable) errors.

  • Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard: While consumer Gemini does not have an exclusive entry on the dashboard, it shares infrastructure with Google Workspace and Google Cloud. Check the status of Google Drive, Docs, and Google Cloud Platform services. If these are experiencing issues, Gemini is likely affected too.
  • Use Third-Party Outage Trackers: Check Downdetector or search social media platforms using terms like "Gemini down" or "Google Gemini not working" to see if other users are reporting simultaneous issues.
  • Verify API Status: If you are a developer using Gemini via Google AI Studio or Vertex AI, check the Google Cloud Service Health dashboard specifically for AI Studio or Vertex AI service disruptions.

2. Force refresh your browser Sometimes, Gemini's interface stalls due to cached scripts that failed to load correctly during a brief network hiccup.

  • On Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
  • On macOS: Press Cmd + Shift + R in Safari or Chrome.

This forces your browser to bypass its local cache and retrieve the latest version of the Gemini page directly from Google's servers.

3. Test in Incognito or Private Browsing mode Browser extensions, especially ad blockers, script blockers, or privacy-focused add-ons, frequently interfere with Gemini's real-time WebSockets connection.

  1. Open an Incognito/Private window in your browser.
  2. Navigate to the Gemini website and sign in.
  3. Try submitting a prompt.

If Gemini works perfectly in Incognito mode, one of your browser extensions is causing the block. Disable your extensions one by one—starting with ad blockers and VPN extensions—to find the culprit.

4. Clear Google site data and cookies Corrupted cookies or local storage data can cause Gemini to get stuck in a boot loop or load as a blank page.

  1. In Chrome, click the tune icon (two sliders) or the padlock icon next to the URL in the address bar.
  2. Click Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  3. Select Manage on-device site data and delete the stored data for gemini.google.com.
  4. Reload the page and sign back in.

Alternatively, clear your entire browser cache and cookies for the last 24 hours via your browser's settings menu (Ctrl + Shift + Delete).

5. Switch networks and check DNS Network configurations can block the specific ports or protocols Gemini uses to stream responses.

  • Disable VPNs or Proxies: Virtual Private Networks often route traffic through congested servers that Google blocks to prevent scraping or DDoS attacks. Turn off your VPN and try reloading Gemini.
  • Switch to Mobile Data: To rule out local router or ISP issues, disconnect from your Wi-Fi and connect your device to a mobile hotspot. If Gemini loads instantly, your router's firewall or ISP is blocking the service.
  • Flush your DNS cache:
  • On Windows: Open Command Prompt as administrator, type ipconfig /flushdns, and press Enter.
  • On macOS: Open Terminal, type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder, and press Enter.

6. Create a new chat session If Gemini is stuck generating or displays a blank response on a specific prompt, the individual chat database entry might be corrupted.

  1. Locate the left sidebar.
  2. Click New chat (represented by a "+" icon) to open a fresh thread.
  3. Type a simple prompt like "Hello" to see if the interface responds.

If the new chat works, the previous thread was likely corrupted due to token limits, formatting errors, or a temporary API dropout during generation. You should delete the broken thread from your chat history.

When to escalate If you have confirmed that there is no global outage, cleared your cache, disabled extensions, and still receive 500-range errors or blank screens across multiple devices and networks, the issue is likely account-specific or a localized Google CDN outage.

  • Report a bug: Click your profile icon in the top right of the Gemini interface, select Help, and click Report an issue or Send feedback. Include system details and screenshots of any error codes.
  • Check Google One support: If you are a paid Gemini Advanced subscriber via Google One, you have access to dedicated 24/7 human support. Visit the Google One support page and initiate a live chat or email ticket to escalate the billing/access state of your account.
