Gemini Error 502 Bad Gateway: How to Fix

Updated 10/14/2026

A 502 Bad Gateway error on Google Gemini indicates that one server on the internet received an invalid response from another server. In Gemini’s infrastructure, this typically means Google's frontend edge servers (which handle your web request) are unable to successfully communicate with the backend AI processing engines or database servers.

While a 502 error often points to a temporary outage or configuration issue on Google's end, it can also occur due to corrupted local browser cache, misconfigured network settings, or interference from browser extensions. Follow these structured troubleshooting steps to isolate the cause and restore your connection to Gemini.

1. Verify if Gemini is Down Before changing any local settings, determine if the 502 Bad Gateway is a widespread Google outage or isolated to your device.

  1. Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard: While Gemini does not always have its own dedicated public tracker, major service disruptions are often logged under the Google Workspace Dashboard or the Google Cloud Service Health page.
  2. Monitor Third-Party Trackers: Visit sites like Downdetector and search for "Google" or "Google Gemini" to see if there is a sudden spike in reported outages.
  3. Check Social Media: Search platforms like X (formerly Twitter) for "Gemini down" or "Gemini 502" to see if other users are reporting the identical error message in real time.

If a global outage is confirmed, the only solution is to wait for Google’s engineering teams to resolve the server-side infrastructure issues.

2. Perform a Hard Refresh Browsers often cache error pages, including 502 Bad Gateway screens. A standard page refresh may just reload the cached error rather than establishing a fresh connection to Gemini.

  • On Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + F5, or hold Ctrl and click the Reload button in your browser.
  • On macOS: Press Cmd + Shift + R, or hold the Shift key and click the Reload button.

This forces the browser to bypass the cache and request the page directly from Google’s active servers.

3. Clear Cache and Site Data for Gemini If a hard refresh does not work, corrupted cookies or local storage files associated with your Google account session may be causing the gateway communication to fail.

  1. Open Chrome or your preferred browser and navigate to gemini.google.com.
  2. Click the padlock or settings icon located on the far left of the address bar.
  3. Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  4. Click Manage on-device site data or Clear data.
  5. Confirm the deletion, restart your browser, and navigate back to Gemini. You will need to sign back into your Google account.

4. Disable Conflicting Browser Extensions Ad-blockers, script-blockers, privacy extensions, or custom translation tools can alter the headers of your HTTP requests. If these headers are stripped or modified, Google's gateway servers may reject the request with a 502 error.

  1. Open your browser's extension manager (e.g., chrome://extensions/ in Chrome).
  2. Temporarily toggle off all active extensions, especially ad-blockers, VPN proxies, and privacy-shield tools.
  3. Open an Incognito or Private Browsing window. This loads the site without most active extensions.
  4. Try to access Gemini. If it loads, re-enable your extensions one by one to identify the specific tool causing the conflict.

5. Flush Your DNS Cache and Switch DNS Local network routing issues can cause your device to target outdated or unresponsive IP addresses for Google's servers. Flushing your DNS resolver cache forces your operating system to fetch updated IP mapping.

  • On Windows: Open Command Prompt as Administrator, type ipconfig /flushdns, and press Enter.
  • On macOS: Open Terminal, type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder, and press Enter.

If the issue persists, consider changing your network's DNS servers to Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) via your operating system's network adapter settings.

When to Escalate If Google’s official status pages report no active outages, but you continue to experience a 502 Bad Gateway error across multiple devices and networks, the issue may be isolated to your specific Google Account backend routing.

Since Gemini does not feature a direct live-chat support desk for free-tier users, you should submit a diagnostic report. Click the Help (question mark) icon in the lower-left corner of the Gemini interface (if accessible) and select Report a problem. If you are a Google One AI Premium subscriber, you can request direct support via the Google One Help Center to have a support agent escalate your account status to the engineering team.
