Gemini Extensions Not Working: How to Fix

Updated 10/6/2026

Google Gemini’s extensions allow the model to interact with external Google apps like Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Flights. When these extensions stop working, Gemini may claim it cannot access your personal files, refuse to search the web, or provide generic, outdated responses instead of real-time data.

Use this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to restore functionality to your Gemini extensions.

1. Verify and Re-enable Extensions in Settings

Sometimes, service updates or account sync issues can toggle your Gemini extensions off automatically.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to the [Gemini home page](https://gemini.google.com/).
  2. Click on the Settings gear icon in the bottom-left corner of the sidebar, or click on Extensions directly if visible in your menu.
  3. Browse the list of available extensions (such as Google Workspace, YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Flights).
  4. If an extension is toggled off, click the switch to turn it back on.
  5. If the extension is already toggled on but not working, turn it off, wait 30 seconds, and toggle it back on to refresh the connection.

2. Use Explicit Mention Syntax (@)

Gemini relies on natural language processing to decide when to trigger an extension. If your prompt is too vague, Gemini might try to answer using its pre-trained knowledge base instead of fetching real-time data.

You can manually force Gemini to use a specific extension using the @ trigger:

  • For Workspace documents: Type @Google Drive search for [topic] or @Google Docs summarize my last document directly in the prompt bar.
  • For emails: Type @Gmail find my confirmation code from last Tuesday.
  • For videos: Type @YouTube find tutorials on Python APIs.

If typing @ does not bring up a drop-down menu of available extensions, your browser is failing to load the extension assets. Proceed to Step 5.

3. Address Workspace Admin Restrictions

If you are using a Google Workspace account managed by an employer, school, or organization, your system administrator controls access to Gemini features.

  • Check permissions: If you see a message stating "This extension is not available for your account," your administrator has disabled access to Google Workspace extensions for data privacy reasons.
  • The fix: You must contact your IT administrator and ask them to enable the Gemini App access control settings in the Google Admin Console under Apps > Additional Google Services > Gemini.

If you are using a personal Gmail account, verify that you are logged into the correct Google account in your current browser tab, as profile mix-ups can revoke access permissions.

4. Confirm Language and Regional Compatibility

Google periodically rolls out extensions to new regions, but some extensions remain restricted by language or geographical location.

  • Language settings: Gemini extensions work most reliably when your primary Google Account language and Gemini language are set to English.
  • Regional blocks: Certain features, specifically the Google Workspace extension, may be blocked in your country due to local privacy regulations (such as those in the EU). Try checking Google’s official regional availability list to verify if your location is supported.

5. Reset App Cache and Cookies

Corrupted browser data can prevent the Gemini interface from correctly authenticating with your Google Account API endpoints, causing extensions to fail silently.

  1. In your browser (e.g., Google Chrome), click the three dots in the top-right corner.
  2. Go to Clear browsing data.
  3. Set the time range to All time.
  4. Check the boxes for Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  5. Click Clear data, restart your browser, and log back into Gemini.

When to escalate

If Gemini extensions still fail to load, fetch data, or display in your settings menu after completing these steps, the issue is likely a server-side service outage on Google's end. Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard or community forums to see if a widespread API disruption is occurring. If you are an enterprise customer, open a support ticket directly through your Google Workspace Admin Console.
