Fix Gemini Repeating Same Answer Loop

Updated 10/16/2026

Why Gemini Gets Stuck in Repetitive Loops

Large Language Models (LLMs) like Google Gemini can occasionally get stuck in "repetition loops." This happens when the model generates a sequence of tokens that feeds back into its own context window, signaling to its attention mechanism that this specific pattern is highly probable. Once a loop starts, Gemini will continue to repeat the same phrase, paragraph, or entire response every time you prompt it within that specific chat thread.

This behavior is typically caused by: - Context window pollution: The repetitive text is already in the active chat history, making the model highly likely to repeat it. - Vague prompt constraints: Lack of specific guidance allows the model to default back to its previous output structure. - Greedy decoding issues: The underlying sampler chooses the highest-probability next token, which repeatedly falls into the same local minimum.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to break the loop and get Gemini functioning correctly again.

1. Start a New Chat Session

The fastest and most effective way to clear a repetition loop is to purge the active context window.

  1. On the Gemini web interface, look at the left-hand navigation panel.
  2. Click New chat (represented by a "+" icon) to open a blank workspace.
  3. Paste a modified version of your original prompt instead of copying the exact same text that triggered the loop.

*Why this works:* Starting a new chat completely clears the short-term memory (context window) that Gemini uses to generate the next token, preventing it from referencing the repeated text.

2. Force a Token Branch with Negative Prompting

If you must stay in the same thread, you can force Gemini's attention mechanism away from the repeating pattern by explicitly forbidding certain words or structures.

  1. Type a prompt that directly calls out the repetition.
  2. Use a format like: *"Answer the following question, but do not use any of the phrases, sentences, or structures you used in your previous three responses: [Your prompt here]."*
  3. If using the Gemini API, adjust the frequency_penalty and presence_penalty parameters upward (e.g., set them to 0.5 or 1.0) to penalize repetitive tokens.

3. Clear Local Browser Data

Sometimes, the repetitive loop is exacerbated by local UI caching issues in your browser, where the web app fails to send the updated conversation history to Google’s servers.

  1. In Google Chrome, click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Clear browsing data.
  2. Set the time range to Last hour or All time.
  3. Check the boxes for Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  4. Click Clear data, reload the Gemini page, and sign back in.

4. Modify Your Prompt Framing

If Gemini repeats the same incorrect answer because of a logic trap, changing the format of your prompt will bypass the flawed reasoning path.

  • Use Role-play: Assign a specific persona to Gemini. Instead of asking "Explain quantum physics," try "Explain quantum physics as if you are a high school science teacher who avoids jargon."
  • Use Few-Shot Prompting: Provide 1 or 2 examples of the exact output format you expect before asking your actual question.
  • Change the Output Format: If Gemini is looping on a text paragraph, command it to output the response as a bulleted list, a markdown table, or a JSON block.

5. Switch the Model Version

If you are using Gemini Advanced (which runs on Ultra/1.5 Pro) and it gets stuck, switching back to the standard Gemini model (1.5 Flash) can break the pattern because the two models use different weights and sampling parameters.

  1. In the web interface, look for the model selector dropdown at the top of your chat window.
  2. Toggle from Gemini Advanced to Gemini.
  3. Submit your prompt. Once you receive a clean response, you can switch back to the Advanced model if needed.

When to Escalate

If Gemini continues to repeat the exact same response across completely new chat threads, different browsers, and alternative devices, the issue is likely a platform-side API degradation or a bug in a newly rolled-out model weights update.

  1. Check third-party status checkers to see if other users are reporting the same model behavior.
  2. Use the Feedback tool (the thumbs-down icon) directly under the looping response in Gemini to submit the bug directly to Google's engineering team.
  3. If you are an API user, check the Google Cloud Service Health Dashboard for ongoing Vertex AI or Gemini API outages.
