Gemini Service Unavailable Error: Quick Fixes

Updated 10/1/2026

When Google Gemini displays a "Service Unavailable" message, a 502/503 error, or fails to connect entirely, the disruption is usually caused by either a temporary server-side outage on Google’s network or a localized browser caching conflict.

Because Gemini relies on active, low-latency WebSockets to stream AI responses, any minor network interruption can trigger a generic connection failure. Follow this troubleshooting guide to determine if Google is down and how to clear local blocks preventing Gemini from loading.

1. Confirm Google Server Status Before modifying your local device settings, verify whether Google's servers are experiencing a widespread outage.

  • Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard: While Gemini does not always have a dedicated standalone row, outages usually correlate with disruptions in Google Drive or Google Docs.
  • Monitor Third-Party Trackers: Check platforms like Downdetector or monitoring sites under "Google" or "Google Gemini" to see if other users are reporting spike charts in your region.
  • Check Official Developer Channels: If you are using Gemini via API or Google AI Studio, check the Google Cloud Service Health dashboard for real-time API degradation reports.

If a global outage is reported, local troubleshooting will not work. You must wait for Google to deploy a server-side fix.

2. Perform a Hard Refresh to Bypass Cached Outage States If Gemini's servers went down briefly and have since recovered, your browser may still be serving a cached copy of the "Service Unavailable" error page. A standard refresh is not enough; you must force the browser to bypass its local cache.

  • For Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5 or hold Ctrl and click the reload icon.
  • For Mac (Safari, Chrome): Press Cmd + Shift + R (or hold Shift and click the reload icon in Safari).
  • For Mobile Browsers: You will need to close the tab entirely, clear your history for the last hour, and open a new session.

3. Test in Private or Incognito Mode Corrupted cookies, active browser extensions (specifically ad blockers, privacy shields, or script blockers), and outdated session data can block Gemini's network requests. Testing in an isolated environment helps isolate the cause.

  1. Open an Incognito or Private Browsing window.
  2. Navigate directly to the Gemini web interface.
  3. Sign in to your Google account.
  4. Attempt to run a test prompt.

If Gemini works in Incognito mode, the issue is caused by a browser extension or a corrupted cookie. Disable your active extensions one by one (starting with ad blockers and VPN extensions) until you find the tool causing the conflict.

4. Clear Site Data for Google Gemini If Incognito mode resolved the error, you should clear Gemini's specific site cookies and local storage without logging out of your entire Google account.

  1. While on the Gemini homepage, click the tune/lock icon to the left of the URL in your address bar.
  2. Click on Site settings (or Cookies and site data).
  3. Select Manage on-device site data or click Clear data.
  4. Reload the page and log back in.

5. Disable VPNs and Reset Network DNS Gemini uses aggressive geofencing and real-time network routing. Active Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) or proxy servers often route traffic through IP addresses flagged by Google's automated security systems, resulting in a "Service Unavailable" block.

  1. Disconnect your VPN or Proxy: Temporarily disable any active VPN software and attempt to refresh the page on your standard connection.
  2. Flush Your DNS (Windows): Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run ipconfig /flushdns to clear outdated routing tables.
  3. Flush Your DNS (Mac): Open Terminal and run sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.

6. Clear App Cache (Android & iOS) If you are using the dedicated Gemini app on an Android device or accessing Gemini via the Google app on iOS, localized cache buildup can freeze the interface.

  • On Android: Go to Settings > Apps > Gemini (or Google) > Storage > tap Clear Cache. Force stop the app and restart it.
  • On iOS: Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Google > tap Offload App. Reinstall the app from the App Store to clear system files without deleting personal account settings.

When to Escalate If Gemini continues to display a service unavailable error after you have cleared your cache, disabled VPNs, and confirmed that public status trackers show no active outages, the issue may be account-specific. This occurs if Google flags your account for rapid API requests or if your Google Workspace administrator has disabled access to generative AI tools. Contact your Google Workspace admin if you are using an enterprise or school account, or post the specific error signature in the Google Gemini Help Community for account-level review.
