Gemini Subscription Not Upgrading: How to Fix

Updated 10/10/2026

Upgrading to Gemini Advanced (via the Google One AI Premium plan) should grant immediate access to Gemini 1.5 Pro and subscriber-only features. However, many users report that after submitting payment, the interface continues to display the free tier or prompts them to upgrade again.

This troubleshooting guide outlines how to fix account sync errors, resolve payment processing blocks, and verify that your subscription is active.

1. Verify Active Account and Check for Profile Mismatch

The most common reason a subscription fails to activate is an account mismatch. This happens when you are signed into multiple Google accounts in the same browser, and your payment was applied to a different profile than the one actively viewing Gemini.

  1. Go to [gemini.google.com](https://gemini.google.com).
  2. Click on your Profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Look closely at the email address listed. Ensure it matches the exact Google account you used to purchase the subscription.
  4. If the emails do not match, click Sign out of all accounts.
  5. Log back in using *only* the specific Google account that holds the active subscription.

*Note: Using built-in browser account switchers can sometimes cause session token conflicts. Signing out completely and logging back in with a single account is the most reliable way to force a profile refresh.*

2. Check Subscription and Payment Status on Google One

If your banking app shows a pending charge but Gemini remains on the free tier, the transaction may not have settled successfully in Google's billing system.

  1. Open a new tab and go to [one.google.com](https://one.google.com).
  2. Ensure you are signed in with your primary Google account.
  3. Check the storage dashboard. If your plan upgraded successfully, your storage limit should have increased (typically to 2 TB for the AI Premium plan).
  4. Next, visit [pay.google.com](https://pay.google.com) and click on the Activity tab.
  5. Locate the transaction for your Google One / Gemini upgrade.
  6. Check the transaction status. If it says Pending, Failed, or Declined, your bank may have blocked the transaction. Update your payment method in Google Pay and try the upgrade process again.

3. Clear Cache and Force Session Refresh

Your browser may be displaying a cached version of the Gemini interface, ignoring the updated subscription status stored on Google's servers.

  1. On your desktop browser, navigate to the Gemini tab and perform a hard refresh:
  2. Windows: Press Ctrl + F5 (or Ctrl + Shift + R).
  3. Mac: Press Cmd + Shift + R.
  4. If the interface does not update, clear your site-specific cookies:
  5. In Google Chrome, click the settings icon (three vertical dots) in the top-right corner > Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions.
  6. Search for google.com in the top right search bar.
  7. Click the trash can icon next to google.com to clear cookies, then close and reopen your browser.
  8. Navigate back to Gemini and sign in. This forces your browser to query Google’s databases for your updated subscription status.

4. Check for Workspace Account Restrictions

Google One AI Premium and Gemini Advanced subscriptions are designed exclusively for personal Google Accounts ending in @gmail.com.

  1. If you are signed in with a work, school, or organization email address, you cannot independently upgrade your profile to Gemini Advanced.
  2. Organizations manage Gemini access through the Google Workspace Admin Console. If you paid for an upgrade on a Workspace account using a personal credit card, the features may be restricted or blocked by administrative policy.
  3. To resolve this, you must cancel the subscription on your Workspace account, request a refund if applicable, and purchase the upgrade on a personal Gmail account instead.

When to Escalate

If Google One indicates that your AI Premium subscription is active, your payment is settled, you are logged into a personal @gmail.com account, and Gemini still fails to show the Advanced toggle, do not attempt to repurchase the plan.

Escalate the issue to Google One Support directly by visiting [one.google.com/support](https://one.google.com/support). As a paying subscriber, you have access to live chat and email support. They can manually synchronize your billing ledger with your Gemini user permissions.
