Gemini Upgrade Button Greyed Out: How to Fix

Updated 10/8/2026

If you are trying to subscribe to Gemini Advanced (via the Google One AI Premium plan) but the "Upgrade," "Start trial," or "Get Gemini Advanced" button is greyed out, unclickable, or missing entirely, the issue is typically caused by account-level restrictions or billing profile conflicts.

Because Gemini Advanced subscriptions are processed directly through Google One, any inconsistency in your Google account configuration will prevent you from accessing the checkout screen. Follow these structured troubleshooting steps to identify the block and enable the upgrade option.

Step 1: Verify Your Account Type (Workspace vs. Personal) Google does not allow standard Workspace (business, enterprise, or school) accounts to purchase individual Gemini Advanced subscriptions through the standard consumer portal.

  1. Look at the top right corner of the Gemini interface to check which account is currently active.
  2. If the email ends in a custom domain (e.g., yourname@company.com) or a school domain (e.g., student@university.edu), you cannot upgrade this account individually.
  3. The Fix: Switch to a personal @gmail.com account to purchase the subscription. If you must use your work account, your Google Workspace administrator must purchase and assign a Gemini Enterprise or Gemini Business add-on license to your account via the Google Admin Console.

Step 2: Check Google Family Group Roles If you are part of a Google Family Group, your role within that group heavily impacts your ability to modify subscriptions.

  1. Go to [g.co/yourfamily](https://g.co/yourfamily) to check your status.
  2. If you are a Family Member: Only the Family Manager (the person who created the group) can purchase or upgrade to a Google One AI Premium plan if family sharing is enabled. If you try to upgrade individually while sharing is active, the button may be disabled.
  3. The Fix: Ask your Family Manager to purchase the Google One AI Premium subscription. Once they upgrade, they can share the Gemini Advanced benefits with you. Alternatively, you must leave the Family Group to purchase an individual subscription on your own payment method.

Step 3: Confirm Age Verification and Region Eligibility Google enforces strict age and regional requirements for its generative AI tools and premium tiers.

  1. Verify Your Age: Your Google account must show that you are 18 years of age or older. If your age is unverified, go to [myaccount.google.com/personal-info](https://myaccount.google.com/personal-info) and confirm your date of birth. You may need to upload an ID or credit card to verify your age with Google.
  2. Check Regional Restrictions: Ensure your account's home country matches a region where Gemini Advanced and Google One AI Premium are supported. If you are using a VPN, temporarily disable it, as a mismatched IP address and billing country can cause Google's checkout script to freeze and disable the purchase button.

Step 4: Resolve Third-Party Billing Conflicts If you already have an active Google One subscription billed through a third-party partner (such as Apple App Store, Google Play on Android, a mobile carrier, or your internet service provider), the web interface cannot directly process an upgrade.

  1. Open the Google One app on your mobile device or visit [one.google.com](https://one.google.com).
  2. Navigate to your plan details to see who bills your subscription.
  3. The Fix: If billed by Apple or a third party, you must cancel your current subscription through their portal, wait for the billing cycle to end and revert your account to the free tier, and then subscribe directly to the AI Premium plan via Google’s website.

Step 5: Clear Browser Cache and Disable Script Blockers Sometimes, the button itself is functional, but local browser extensions or cached data prevent the subscription modal (the checkout pop-up) from rendering.

  1. Disable all ad-blockers, script-blockers (like NoScript), and privacy-focused extensions (such as Privacy Badger).
  2. Clear your browser's cookies and cached images/files specifically for google.com and gemini.google.com.
  3. Open an Incognito or Private Browsing window, log back in to Gemini, and attempt to click the upgrade link again. This bypasses local cached scripts that may be broken.

When to escalate If the upgrade button remains greyed out after you have verified you are using a personal, age-verified account that is not blocked by family group settings, you must contact Google One Support. Go to the [Google One Help Center](https://support.google.com/googleone), sign in with the target account, and click "Contact us" to reach a support agent who can manually inspect your account for backend billing holds.
