How to Fix: Cannot Cancel Grok Subscription
Updated 10/7/2026
Because Grok is bundled with X Premium (for consumer access) or managed via the separate xAI Console (for developers using the API), canceling your subscription can be confusing. Many users find the "Cancel Subscription" button is grayed out, missing, or throws an error during processing.
This guide outlines how to locate your exact billing platform and successfully cancel your Grok subscription to prevent future auto-renewals.
1. Identify Your Billing Platform You cannot cancel your subscription on the web if you originally signed up through a mobile device, and vice versa. Your first step is identifying which platform handles your payments: * **Web Credit Card payments:** Managed through Stripe on the X/xAI website. * **Apple iOS purchases:** Managed through your Apple ID / App Store. * **Android purchases:** Managed through your Google Play Store account.
Check your bank or credit card statement. If the charge says "Apple Bill," "Google Play," or "X Premium/xAI," this tells you where the billing portal is located.
2. Canceling Grok / X Premium on Web If you subscribed via a web browser, billing is processed via Stripe. If the cancel button is missing or failing, follow these steps:
- Bypass the standard settings menu: Go directly to the X Premium portal by navigating to x.com/settings/premium while logged in.
- Access your Subscription Management: Click on Manage Subscription. If the screen is blank or fails to load, disable your ad-blocker or brave shields, as they frequently block Stripe's billing iframe.
- Cancel via Stripe portal: Click Cancel Plan. You must confirm the cancellation on the subsequent popup screen.
- Force-clear your cache: If the "Manage Subscription" page hangs, press Ctrl + F5 (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) to clear your browser's cache, or attempt the cancellation in an Incognito/Private window.
3. Canceling Grok on iOS (iPhone & iPad) If you purchased your subscription through the X app on an iOS device, Apple manages your billing. The cancel button will not appear on the web interface.
- Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
- Tap your Apple ID / Name at the very top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Find X or X Premium in your list of active subscriptions.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. If you only see options to renew or change plans, the subscription is already canceled and will expire at the end of the current billing cycle.
4. Canceling Grok on Android If you signed up through the Android app, Google Play handles your billing.
- Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right corner.
- Select Payments & subscriptions, then tap Subscriptions.
- Select X or X Premium from the list.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the on-screen instructions to confirm.
5. Canceling xAI API Subscription If you are a developer using Grok via the xAI API and want to cancel your usage-based or tiered API subscription, you must use the developer console:
- Navigate to console.x.ai and sign in.
- Click on the Billing tab in the left-hand navigation sidebar.
- Locate your payment plan or active credit system. If you have auto-recharge enabled, click Disable Auto-Recharge to prevent future automatic charges.
- Delete your saved payment method. Note that you may need to clear any outstanding balances before the system allows you to remove your card.
