Fix Grok API CORS Errors: Guide for Developers
Updated 10/17/2026
If you are building an application integrated with xAI's Grok API and encounter an error message like Access to fetch at 'https://api.x.ai/v1/chat/completions' from origin 'http://localhost:3000' has been blocked by CORS policy, you are attempting to make a direct API call from a web browser or client-side application.
The Grok API does not support Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) from arbitrary web origins. This restriction is a standard security protocol implemented by xAI. If the API allowed direct browser-to-server requests, your private API key would be exposed in the network tab of the user's browser tools, leaving your account vulnerable to unauthorized usage and unexpected billing charges.
To resolve this error, you must route your API calls through a secure server-side backend. Follow these steps to implement a backend proxy server or serverless function.
Step 1: Stop client-side API calls
Remove any direct calls to https://api.x.ai from your React, Vue, Angular, Svelte, or vanilla JavaScript frontend files. Do not hardcode your API key inside any frontend component.
Step 2: Build a Node.js Express proxy
Creating a minimal backend server is the most common way to resolve CORS issues. This server acts as a middleman: your browser sends a request to your server, your server forwards the request to xAI, and then your server passes the response back to your browser.
1. Initialize a new Node.js project and install the required dependencies: `bash npm init -y npm install express cors dotenv cross-fetch ` 2. Create an index.js file and add the following proxy configuration: `javascript const express = require('express'); const cors = require('cors'); const fetch = require('cross-fetch'); require('dotenv').config();
const app = express(); app.use(express.json());
// Enable CORS for your specific frontend domain app.use(cors({ origin: 'http://localhost:3000' // Replace with your frontend URL }));
app.post('/api/grok', async (req, res) => { try { const response = await fetch('https://api.x.ai/v1/chat/completions', { method: 'POST', headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json', 'Authorization': Bearer ${process.env.XAI_API_KEY} }, body: JSON.stringify(req.body) });
const data = await response.json(); res.status(response.status).json(data); } catch (error) { res.status(500).json({ error: 'Failed to communicate with Grok API' }); } });
const PORT = process.env.PORT || 5000; app.listen(PORT, () => console.log(Proxy server running on port ${PORT})); `
Step 3: Implement Next.js route handlers (Alternative)
If you are using Next.js, you do not need to set up a separate Express server. You can utilize built-in Next.js Route Handlers which run entirely on the server side.
1. Create a file at app/api/grok/route.ts (Next.js App Router): `typescript import { NextResponse } from 'next/server';
export async function POST(request: Request) { try { const body = await request.json(); const response = await fetch('https://api.x.ai/v1/chat/completions', { method: 'POST', headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json', 'Authorization': Bearer ${process.env.XAI_API_KEY} }, body: JSON.stringify(body) });
const data = await response.json(); return NextResponse.json(data, { status: response.status }); } catch (error) { return NextResponse.json({ error: 'Internal server error' }, { status: 500 }); } } `
Step 4: Secure your environmental variables
Never push your API key to public repositories. Create a .env file in the root directory of your backend or Next.js project to store your credential safely:
`env XAI_API_KEY=xai-your-actual-secret-api-key-here `
Ensure that .env is added to your project's .gitignore file before committing code.
Step 5: Update your frontend endpoint
Modify your frontend application to call your local backend proxy instead of the direct xAI endpoint:
`javascript // Before (Caused CORS Error): // const res = await fetch('https://api.x.ai/v1/chat/completions', { ... });
// After (Fixed): const response = await fetch('http://localhost:5000/api/grok', { method: 'POST', headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' }, body: JSON.stringify({ model: 'grok-2-latest', messages: [{ role: 'user', content: 'Hello Grok!' }] }) }); const data = await response.json(); `
When to escalate
If you are running a server-side backend proxy but your corporate gateway or cloud platform (such as Cloudflare, AWS WAF, or Vercel) is throwing its own CORS or access-denied errors, verify your gateway's security headers.
If your local network requires outbound proxy configuration to reach external servers, make sure your backend environment has HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY variables correctly declared. If you suspect an outage on xAI's edge servers, check their API system status page.
