Grok Down Right Now? How to Check and Fix Connection Issues

Updated 9/24/2026

How to verify if Grok is down globally

When Grok stops responding, fails to load, or displays a blank screen, the first step is determining whether the outage is on xAI's side or isolated to your device. Because Grok is integrated into X (formerly Twitter), its availability is tied directly to the X platform infrastructure.

To check the current status: 1. Check X Status and Official Accounts: xAI does not currently maintain a standalone public status page for the Grok consumer interface. Instead, check the official @Support, @grok, or @xai accounts on X for official announcements regarding system maintenance or outages. 2. Search X for Real-Time Reports: Use the X search bar to look up terms like "Grok down", "Grok not working", or "Grok error". Filter by "Latest" to see if other Premium or Premium+ subscribers are experiencing the same issue in real-time. If you see dozens of posts within the last few minutes, it is a confirmed system-wide outage. 3. Check Downdetector for X: Since Grok runs on X’s infrastructure, a general spike in reports on Downdetector for Twitter/X often correlates with Grok outages. Look for spikes in "Website" or "App" connection issues.

Clear local browser conflicts

If other users report that Grok is working fine, the issue is likely a localized browser conflict, corrupted cache, or session timeout on your device.

1. Perform a hard refresh A standard page reload might just pull the broken page from your local cache. * **Windows (Chrome/Firefox/Edge):** Press `Ctrl` + `F5` or `Ctrl` + `Shift` + `R`. * **Mac (Safari/Chrome/Firefox):** Press `Cmd` + `Shift` + `R` (or hold `Shift` and click the reload icon).

2. Clear site data for X.com Corrupted cookies or local storage files can prevent the Grok interface from initializing correctly. * **In Chrome/Edge:** Click the padlock or settings icon to the left of the URL bar, select **Site settings** or **Cookies and site data**, click **Manage cookies and site data**, and then select **Clear data**. * **In Safari:** Go to **Settings** -> **Privacy** -> **Manage Website Data**, search for `x.com`, and click **Remove**. * After clearing, log back into your X account and try accessing Grok again.

3. Disable interfering browser extensions Adblockers, privacy shields (like Brave's built-in shield), and script-blocking extensions can accidentally flag Grok’s WebSocket connections as tracking scripts. * Temporarily disable your adblocker or whitelist `x.com` and `grok.x.ai` (if applicable). * Try opening an Incognito or Private Browsing window where extensions are disabled by default. If Grok loads there, an extension is the culprit.

Fix network and connection blockages

Grok requires a persistent, high-bandwidth connection to stream tokens (text generation) back to your device. Slow or interrupted networks can trigger silent timeouts.

1. Test WebSocket compatibility Grok relies on WebSockets for real-time streaming. If your network blocks WebSockets, Grok may load but fail to generate any text or get stuck on a blank response. * Disconnect from any corporate VPN, school network, or public Wi-Fi that might have strict firewall rules. * Switch to a mobile hotspot or a different Wi-Fi network to test if the connection succeeds.

2. Flush your DNS cache An outdated DNS cache can direct your browser to an offline server node. * **Windows:** Open Command Prompt as Administrator, type `ipconfig /flushdns`, and press Enter. * **Mac:** Open Terminal, type `sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder`, and press Enter.

Use alternative access points

If the web interface remains unresponsive, you can try accessing Grok through alternative channels to bypass the local browser issue.

  1. Switch to the X Mobile App: If you are using a desktop browser, open the official X app on your iOS or Android device. Navigate to the Grok tab. Conversely, if the mobile app is stuck, try a desktop browser.
  2. Switch Grok Models: If the interface loads but fails to respond, try switching between model versions (e.g., from Grok 2 to Grok 2 mini, or toggling "Fun Mode" on/off). This can force the backend to route your request to a different server cluster.

When to escalate

If you have confirmed there is no global outage, cleared your cache, disabled extensions, and tried multiple devices/networks, but Grok still fails to load or gives you a blank screen, your X account's Premium subscription state may be out of sync.

Because Grok is managed under the X Premium ecosystem, you must contact X Support. Tag or direct message @Support on X, or submit a ticket through the X Help Center (help.x.com) under Premium Features. Provide details of the troubleshooting steps you have already attempted.
