How to Fix Grok Error 503 Service Unavailable

Updated 10/7/2026

An HTTP 503 "Service Unavailable" error indicates that the Grok servers (or the X platform infrastructure hosting the AI) are temporarily unable to process your request. This typically happens during sudden traffic spikes, active backend deployments, or partial server outages.

Because Grok is deeply integrated into X (formerly Twitter) and xAI's cloud infrastructure, a 503 error can stem from either a global platform outage or a local network routing issue. Follow these step-by-step diagnostic and troubleshooting instructions to resolve the error or confirm a system-wide outage.

1. Confirm the Status of xAI and X Infrastructure Before modifying local settings, verify whether the issue is on your end or if Grok's servers are experiencing a widespread outage.

  • Check the X Developer Status: If you are using the Grok API, check the xAI console or the developer portal for active API incidents.
  • Search the Live X Feed: Since there is no traditional public status page for Grok, search X for phrases like "Grok down" or "Grok 503". Filter by "Latest" to see if other users are reporting identical issues in real-time. If hundreds of users are posting about the issue simultaneously, the platform is experiencing an outage and you must wait for xAI to deploy a hotfix.
  • Monitor Third-Party Trackers: Check major platform outage trackers for X.com, as Grok's web interface relies entirely on X's core infrastructure.

2. Force a Hard Refresh to Bypass Cached Outage Screens Web browsers and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) often cache error states. Even after xAI brings the servers back online, your browser might continue displaying the cached 503 error page.

  • On Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5, or hold Ctrl and click the reload button.
  • On Mac (Safari, Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R (for Chrome/Firefox) or hold Shift and click the reload button (for Safari).
  • Test in Incognito Mode: Open a private or incognito window and navigate to the Grok interface. If Grok loads successfully here, your primary browser profile is serving cached error data.

3. Clear Session Cookies and Site Data for X Your Grok session is tied to your X Premium authentication cookies. If a rolling update occurs on the backend, old session tokens can cause authentication loops that trigger a 503 server error.

  1. In your browser (e.g., Google Chrome), click the tune/padlock icon to the left of the URL bar while on the Grok page.
  2. Click Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  3. Select Manage on-device site data.
  4. Click the trash can icon next to x.com and grok.x.ai to remove cached cookies and local storage.
  5. Refresh the page, sign back into your X account, and try launching Grok again.

4. Alternate Access Methods (Web vs. Mobile App) If you are accessing Grok through a desktop browser, the 503 error might be limited to a specific web gateway.

  • Switch to the X Mobile App: Open the X app on iOS or Android and tap the Grok tab. The mobile app utilizes a different API gateway route than the desktop browser interface, which often remains functional during partial web-only outages.
  • Switch from Mobile to Web: Conversely, if you are experiencing the error on your phone, try logging into x.com/grok on a desktop browser.

5. Disable VPNs and Reset Custom DNS Settings Highly secure networks, custom DNS configurations, and VPNs can trigger rate-limiting shields on xAI's load balancers, causing them to return a 503 Service Unavailable error to protect the servers from suspected DDoS attacks.

  1. Temporarily disconnect your VPN: Turn off any active proxy or VPN service.
  2. Revert to Default DNS: If you use custom DNS servers (like AdGuard or private DNS), temporarily switch your device's DNS settings to automatically obtain DNS, or use Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).
  3. Disable browser ad blockers: Some aggressive tracker blockers mistake Grok's telemetry requests for malicious scripts, which can disrupt the connection and trigger generic server errors.

When to Escalate If you have completed all the steps above and still receive a 503 error, the problem lies entirely on the server side. You must wait for xAI's engineering team to resolve the underlying infrastructure issues. To report persistent bugs, you can tag `@grok` or `@Support` on X with screenshots of the 503 error, or file a support ticket directly through your xAI API console if you are experiencing the error via API endpoints.
