Grok Giving Wrong Answers: How to Fix Model Accuracy

Updated 10/10/2026

When xAI's Grok begins outputting inaccurate information, hallucinating facts, or delivering lower-quality answers than usual, it can disrupt your workflow. Because Grok relies heavily on real-time data from X (formerly Twitter) alongside its base training, its outputs can sometimes be swayed by unverified social media posts, satirical accounts, or corrupted conversation context.

If Grok is giving you incorrect or degraded answers, use this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to restore its accuracy.

1. Switch Off "Fun Mode"

Grok features a built-in personality toggle that switches between "Fun Mode" and "Regular Mode." Fun Mode is designed to inject sarcasm, humor, and edgy commentary into its answers. However, this mode frequently prioritizes comedic value and personality over strict factual accuracy, leading to exaggerations or outright falsehoods.

  1. Open your Grok chat window.
  2. Locate the mode toggle at the bottom or top of the interface.
  3. Switch the setting from Fun Mode to Regular Mode (or select the standard Grok 2/Grok 2 mini model, depending on your current UI layout).
  4. Resubmit your prompt. Regular Mode forces the model to adhere to objective, factual reporting rather than playful speculation.

2. Clear Your Chat History to Reset Context

Like all large language models, Grok has a finite context window. If an error, misunderstanding, or hallucination occurs early in a conversation, the model will treat that incorrect data as part of its active memory. Arguing with the model in the same thread often worsens the issue, as you are feeding more "incorrect" context back into its memory.

  1. Do not attempt to correct the model repeatedly in the same chat thread.
  2. Click on the New Chat button to wipe the current conversation's active memory.
  3. Rephrase your original prompt cleanly in the new session.
  4. If you need to reference prior data, explicitly copy and paste only the verified facts from the previous chat into the new session, rather than carrying over the entire broken thread.

3. Filter Out Satire and X Platform Noise

Because Grok queries live posts on X to answer topical questions, it is highly susceptible to scraping sarcasm, rumors, coordinated disinformation, or joke accounts. If Grok gives you an incorrect answer about a trending event, it is likely summarizing unverified posts.

  1. Modify your prompt to add strict source constraints. For example: *"Summarize the recent developments regarding [Topic], but filter out satirical accounts, unverified rumors, and opinion posts. Only use verified news reporting."*
  2. Ask the model to cite its sources: *"What is the source for your last claim? Provide the specific usernames, dates, or outlets."*
  3. If you do not require real-time information for your query, instruct Grok to bypass its live search feature entirely: *"Answer this question using only your static training data. Do not search X or the live web for this query."*

4. Use Negative Prompting and Strict Constraints

If Grok does not know an answer, it may try to satisfy your query by fabricating plausible-sounding details. You can prevent this behavior by setting explicit boundaries in your prompt structure.

  1. Use "I don't know" instructions: Always append a safety clause to complex queries. For example: *"If you do not have verified, factual data to answer this, state 'I do not know' rather than guessing."*
  2. Specify output formats: If you are asking for technical or mathematical calculations, instruct Grok to show its work step-by-step: *"Perform this calculation. Write out your reasoning step-by-step before displaying the final answer so I can verify your logic."*
  3. Use system roleplay: Frame Grok as an objective expert. For example: *"Act as a highly objective fact-checker. Review the following statement for accuracy and identify any logical fallacies or factual errors..."*

5. Adjust API Configuration (For Developers)

If you are using the xAI API to build applications and are receiving low-quality or hallucinated outputs, your generation parameters are likely set too high for logical tasks.

  1. Lower the Temperature: A high temperature (e.g., 0.8 to 1.0) encourages creative variation but increases hallucinations. For tasks requiring logical precision, coding, or math, lower your temperature to 0.1 or 0.0.
  2. Adjust top_p: Reduce your top_p value to restrict the model’s vocabulary selections to only the most highly probable tokens.
  3. Verify System Prompts: Ensure your system prompts explicitly command the model to prioritize factual accuracy and decline to answer when certain of an error.

When to escalate

If Grok continues to deliver highly inaccurate answers, gibberish, or severe quality regressions across entirely new chat threads, there may be a backend model deployment issue or an ongoing platform outage at xAI. Check community forums like Reddit (r/Grok) or search the X platform for reports of general model regression. If you are an API subscriber experiencing systemic model errors, log in to your xAI Console, navigate to the support section, and submit a detailed report containing your prompt, system configurations, and the exact inaccurate output generated.
