Grok Keeps Spinning and Won't Load: Quick Troubleshooting
Updated 10/1/2026
When you enter a prompt into Grok and it gets stuck on an infinite loading spinner, a pulsing logo, or an unresponsive grayed-out arrow, it can be difficult to tell if the issue lies with xAI's servers or your browser. Because Grok is deeply integrated into X (formerly Twitter) and its developer console, a breakdown in communication between the frontend interface and the backend API can cause the system to freeze without throwing an explicit error code.
This guide covers the troubleshooting steps required to bypass the loading loop and restore Grok's functionality.
1. Check for Active xAI or X Server Outages
Before changing any browser settings, determine if the issue is a systemic outage. xAI does not currently host a dedicated, real-time public status page for Grok. However, because Grok runs on the infrastructure of X and xAI, you can verify server health using alternative methods:
- Check X Trends: Search for "Grok" or "Grok down" on X. If there is a global or regional outage, you will see a sudden spike in real-time posts from other users experiencing the same issue.
- Verify the Developer Console: If you are an API user, navigate to console.x.ai. If the main console interface fails to load or displays a "Service Unavailable" banner, the xAI gateway is experiencing downtime.
- Third-Party Monitors: Check independent down detectors for X (Twitter) outages. Because Grok is hosted inside the X web app, a broader X infrastructure issue often breaks Grok first.
If there is an active outage, the only solution is to wait for xAI engineers to deploy a fix.
2. Perform a Hard Reload
Your browser may be attempting to run Grok using cached, corrupted files from a previous session. A standard page refresh (F5) often reloads the cached version. You must force a hard reload to fetch fresh scripts from xAI's servers.
- On Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5, or hold Ctrl and click the refresh icon next to the URL bar.
- On Mac (Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R.
- On Mac (Safari): Hold Shift and click the Refresh button in the address bar.
- On the X Mobile App (iOS/Android): Force close the app completely from your device's active app switcher, then reopen it.
3. Clear Local Storage and Cookies
Accumulated cookies and local storage tokens can cause Grok's authentication session to hang. Instead of clearing your entire browser history, you can clear data specifically for X and xAI.
For Google Chrome & Chromium Browsers: 1. Open the page where Grok is stuck. 2. Click the **lock/tune icon** immediately to the left of the URL in the address bar. 3. Click **Site settings**. 4. Click the **Delete data** button under the Usage section. 5. Restart your browser, log back into X, and try launching Grok again.
For Safari: 1. Go to **Safari** > **Settings** (or **Preferences**) > **Privacy**. 2. Click **Manage Website Data**. 3. Search for `x.com` and `xai.com` in the search bar. 4. Select them and click **Remove**. 5. Reload the page and log back in.
4. Disable Adblockers and Network Proxies
Aggressive ad-blocking extensions or security-focused VPNs frequently block the websocket connections and background API calls that Grok uses to stream real-time responses.
- Disable Extensions: Temporarily turn off extensions like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, or any script-blockers.
- Check VPNs: Disable your VPN or switch to a different server location. A high-latency VPN connection can cause xAI's API gateway to terminate your prompt request prematurely, resulting in a permanent loading wheel.
- Disable Pi-hole/DNS Blockers: If you run a network-wide adblocker, check the query log to see if requests to api.x.ai or associated streaming endpoints are being blocked.
5. Test in an Incognito Window
To quickly isolate whether your browser profile, cookies, or extensions are the root cause, open a private or incognito window:
- Open an Incognito window (Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows, Cmd + Shift + N on Mac).
- Navigate directly to x.com/grok or console.x.ai.
- Log in with your credentials.
- If Grok loads instantly and responds to prompts, the issue is caused by an extension or local cache in your primary browser profile.
When to Escalate
If you have completed all the steps above and Grok remains stuck spinning on multiple devices (including your phone over mobile data), your account may be experiencing a provisioning error or temporary rate-limiting block.
- For X Premium Subscribers: Reach out to X Premium support by tagging @Premium on X with a screenshot of the loading issue.
- For Developers: If the console API is failing, check your billing status at console.x.ai to ensure your usage tier has not been paused due to a payment failure, and contact developer support via the console help menu.
