Grok Markdown Formatting Broken: How to Fix

Updated 10/17/2026

Why Is Grok's Formatting Broken?

When Grok outputs raw Markdown syntax instead of rendering cleanly formatted text, your chat screen will fill up with raw asterisks (bold text), unrendered hashtags (## Header), or unformatted code blocks wrapped in raw backticks.

This model-behavior and rendering issue usually stems from one of three areas: 1. Frontend Rendering Failures: The user interface on the X website or mobile app fails to parse the Markdown payload delivered by the LLM. 2. Model Escape Failures: The Grok model incorrectly inserts escape characters (like backslashes) before formatting syntax, which tells the system parser to treat them as plain text rather than layout styling. 3. Browser Extension Conflicts: Ad-blockers, script-blockers, or custom CSS extensions block the stylesheets required to display structural text bubbles.

Use the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the formatting glitch.

1. Issue a Formatting Correction Prompt

If Grok has drifted into a state where it is outputting raw text tags, you can force the model to correct its formatting output behavior within the active chat session.

  • Use a direct corrective prompt: In the chat box, type: "Your markdown formatting is broken. Regenerate your last response using standard, clean markdown formatting without escaping the styling tags."
  • Force an alternative layout: If standard markdown continues to fail, prompt the model: "Format the previous answer using clean HTML tags instead of markdown." This bypasses the broken Markdown parser entirely on your client.

2. Hard Refresh Your Browser or App Cache

If the model is sending correct Markdown syntax but your local interface fails to render it, the local layout engine or parser script has likely stalled.

  • On Desktop (Chrome/Firefox/Edge/Safari): Press Ctrl + F5 (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) to perform a hard reload. This clears your local browser cache for the page and pulls the latest rendering scripts from X's servers.
  • On Mobile (iOS/Android): Fully close the X app. Go to your device's settings menu, select the X app, tap Storage, and select Clear Cache. Relaunch the app and reopen your Grok conversation.

3. Disable Conflicting Browser Extensions

Aggressive privacy shields and content blockers can stop the external CSS files responsible for rendering Grok's styled chat blocks from executing.

  1. Open a new Incognito or Private Browsing window in your browser.
  2. Log into your X account and navigate to Grok.
  3. Check if the Markdown formatting renders correctly in the private window.
  4. If it works, the issue is an active browser extension. Temporarily disable content blockers (such as uBlock Origin or Ghostery), script managers (such as Tampermonkey), or custom CSS injectors (such as Stylus) and refresh the page to isolate the culprit.

4. Toggle System Interface Themes

A known styling bug on the X web interface can cause Grok's stylesheet to fail when switching between light and dark modes. Changing your display preferences forces the page to reload its stylesheet rules.

  1. Go to your X settings sidebar.
  2. Click on Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Display.
  3. Switch your background theme (e.g., from "Lights out" to "Default" light mode, or vice versa).
  4. Return to your Grok chat window. Changing the global CSS rules often forces the browser layout engine to re-render the uncooperative text containers.

5. Use an External Parser (Workaround)

If you are in the middle of a critical coding or writing workflow and cannot spare the time to debug the interface, you can read the clean text externally.

  1. Locate the broken response in your Grok window.
  2. Click the Copy icon at the bottom of Grok's output bubble.
  3. Open a free online markdown viewer (such as Dillinger.io or StackEdit) or paste the copied text into a local text editor that supports markdown rendering (such as Obsidian, Notion, or VS Code).
  4. The raw, unformatted text will instantly display correctly with clean headings, bullet points, and syntax-highlighted code blocks.

When to Escalate

If the formatting remains broken across multiple different chat threads, devices, and browser platforms, it indicates a platform-wide rendering bug introduced by a recent xAI system deployment.

Because we are an independent troubleshooting site and cannot access your account backend, you will need to report the bug to X's technical team. Check the official @grok or @xai accounts on X to see if they have acknowledged a widespread UI bug. If not, submit a bug report via the Help Center in your X profile options menu so developers can patch the parsing engine.
