Grok not showing up after upgrade
Updated 9/24/2026
If you recently upgraded to X (formerly Twitter) Premium or Premium+ to access Grok, but the AI assistant is still locked, missing from your sidebar, or continuously prompting you to subscribe, you are experiencing a session sync or subscription validation error.
Because Grok is integrated directly into the X platform, your access depends on X's billing systems communicating successfully with the Grok application layer. Follow these troubleshooting steps to force your account status to update and unlock Grok.
1. Confirm your X subscription tier Grok is not included in all X subscription levels. If you subscribed to the lowest tier, you will not have access to the AI.
- Open X and go to your Settings and privacy.
- Select Premium or Subscription to view your active plan.
- Verify that you are subscribed to Premium or Premium+. The entry-level "Basic" tier does not include Grok access. If you are on the Basic plan, you must upgrade your tier through your subscription settings to unlock the AI.
2. Log out and log back in to force a token refresh When you purchase a subscription, X issues a new authentication token to your device. If your active session does not refresh, your browser or app will continue to treat you as a non-paying user.
- Click on your profile icon and select Log out of your X account.
- If you use X on multiple devices (such as a desktop browser and a smartphone), log out of all devices.
- Close the browser tab or completely force-close the X mobile app.
- Reopen X and log back in with your credentials. Check the sidebar or navigation menu to see if the Grok icon is now active.
3. Clear your browser cache and cookies Cached data from your previous, non-subscribed session can prevent the X interface from loading the Grok module.
- For Google Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + Delete (Mac). Set the time range to "All time," check the boxes for "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files," then click Clear data.
- For Safari: Go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Search for "x.com" or "twitter.com" and click Remove.
- For Mobile Apps: If you are on Android, long-press the X app icon, go to App Info > Storage & Cache, and tap Clear Cache. If you are on iOS, you must uninstall and reinstall the X app to fully clear its local cache.
4. Resolve mobile app store billing delays If you upgraded your subscription via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store rather than directly on the web, there is often a delay in processing. Apple and Google use third-party receipt validation, which can sometimes take up to 24 hours to sync with X's servers.
- Open your device's app store and view your active subscriptions to confirm the payment was successfully processed and is not "Pending."
- In the X app, go to the subscription upgrade page and look for a Restore Purchases link (if available) to force a check against your Apple/Google billing profile.
- If the payment is completed but Grok remains locked, log into X via a desktop web browser. Web sessions often bypass local app store validation delays.
5. Disable VPNs and check regional availability xAI restricts Grok access based on geographic location. If you purchased Premium but are currently using a VPN, or if you live in an unsupported region, the Grok interface will remain hidden or locked.
- Turn off any active VPN or proxy software.
- Clear your browser cache and reload x.com.
- Ensure your account's primary country setting matches a region where Grok has officially launched (e.g., US, Canada, EU, UK, and others). If your account billing address is in an unsupported region, you will not be able to access Grok even with an active Premium subscription.
