Grok Stuck Generating or Blank Response: How to Fix

Updated 9/23/2026

Is Grok failing to reply? When xAI’s Grok gets stuck on an infinite loading animation, freezes mid-response, or outputs completely blank chat bubbles, it halts your workflow. This issue can happen on both the consumer X Premium interface and the xAI developer console.

Because Grok is deeply integrated into the X platform infrastructure, outages can stem from either the AI model servers themselves or broader X network delivery issues.

Before trying complex local fixes, check if Grok is experiencing a global outage. Since xAI does not publish a dedicated, real-time status page, use these steps to verify system status: - Check X Search: Search for "Grok down" or "Grok stuck" on X. If there is a platform-wide outage, you will see a sudden spike in user reports. - Check Official Accounts: Look at the official @grok and @xai accounts for announcements regarding maintenance or service disruptions. - Developer Console Status: If you use the xAI API, check the developer console dashboard for API health metrics.

If other users are reporting normal performance, the issue is likely local to your browser, account session, or network. Follow these steps to resolve the issue.

1. Force Refresh and Clear Local Cache Your browser may be attempting to load Grok using outdated or corrupted cached files. A standard page reload might not fix this. 1. On Windows, press `Ctrl + F5` or `Ctrl + Shift + R` inside your browser. 2. On Mac, press `Cmd + Shift + R` in Safari or Chrome. 3. If the page reloads but still shows a blank response, clear the browser cache specifically for X/xAI. In Chrome, Brave, or Edge, click the padlock or settings icon next to the URL bar, select **Site Settings**, and click **Clear data**.

2. Test in an Incognito Window Browser extensions—especially ad blockers, privacy blockers, or custom script managers—can block the WebSocket connections that Grok uses to stream responses in real-time. 1. Open a new Incognito or Private Browsing window. 2. Log into your X account or xAI console. 3. Attempt to run the same prompt. 4. If Grok works here, a browser extension is blocking the response. Disable extensions one by one (specifically ad-blockers like uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger) until you find the culprit, then whitelist the domain.

3. Verify and Reset WebSocket Connections Grok relies on streaming APIs to send tokens one by one. If your network blocks persistent HTTP connections or WebSockets, you will get a blank response or a generation that freezes immediately. 1. **Disable VPNs/Proxies:** Some secure VPNs block the streaming responses used by large language models. Disable your VPN and try again. 2. **Switch Networks:** If you are on a restricted corporate or school network, the firewall may block WebSocket protocols. Switch to a mobile hotspot to test if the restriction is network-based. 3. **Flush DNS:** Open your command terminal (Command Prompt on Windows, Terminal on Mac) and type `ipconfig /flushdns` (Windows) or `sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder` (Mac), then hit Enter.

4. Reset Your Chat Session Sometimes a specific chat thread becomes corrupted due to token limit overruns or formatting errors in previous prompts, causing the model to stall. 1. Look for the "New Chat" or "+" button in the Grok interface to start a completely fresh thread. 2. If you are stuck on the main feed page on X, try navigating away to your Home feed, wait 30 seconds, and return to the Grok tab. 3. Avoid pasting extremely large blocks of code or unformatted text as the first prompt, which can occasionally overwhelm the input parser and trigger a blank crash.

5. Address API-Specific Blank Responses If you are a developer using the xAI API and getting blank responses (empty choices array or status code 200 with no content): 1. **Check the `stream` parameter:** If you have set `stream: true` in your API call but your script is not configured to handle chunked server-sent events (SSE), your console will print a blank output or time out. Set `stream: false` for a standard JSON response to test integration. 2. **Inspect the HTTP Response Code:** Make sure you aren't silently failing on an unhandled error (like 402 Payment Required or 422 Invalid Parameters). Log the full raw response body to locate the error message.

When to Escalate If you have cleared your cache, disabled extensions, verified your network, and still receive blank or frozen responses, the issue lies with xAI's backend systems. - **For X Premium Users:** Submit a support request through the X Help Center under the "X Premium features" category. - **For API Developers:** Contact the developer relations team directly via the feedback portals in the xAI Console (`console.x.ai`). Provide your organization ID, the request timestamp, and the exact API payload used.
