Grok Stuck in a Loop Repeating Text? How to Fix It

Updated 10/4/2026

When using xAI's Grok, you may occasionally encounter a bug where the model gets stuck in an infinite repetition loop. It might repeat the exact same sentence, cycle through a specific block of code endlessly, or keep outputting the same phrase over and over in a single response. This behavior, often called a "repetition loop," occurs when the model's token prediction weights favor previously generated text too heavily, causing it to fall into an algorithmic feedback loop.

Because Grok is integrated directly into X (formerly Twitter) and the xAI console, standard UI troubleshooting sometimes isn't enough to break these deep model-behavior loops. Below is a structured guide to help you stop Grok from repeating itself and restore normal performance.

1. Edit your previous prompt to break the pattern When an LLM falls into a loop, the text it has already generated becomes part of its immediate context window. Because it reads its own prior outputs to generate the next word, the repetitive text reinforces the looping behavior.

  1. Locate the prompt you sent right before the looping started.
  2. Click the Edit (pencil) icon next to your prompt.
  3. Modify your query slightly. Add a negative constraint like: "Do not repeat previous sentences" or "Explain this using entirely different words."
  4. Resubmit the edited prompt. This forces the model to recalculate its attention weights and bypass the corrupted history.

2. Start a completely new chat session If editing your prompt does not work, the current conversation history is likely too heavily corrupted by the repetitive tokens.

  1. On the X web interface or the xAI portal, locate the button to start a New Chat (the plus icon or new conversation button).
  2. Avoid copying and pasting the exact same prompt that triggered the loop. Rephrase your initial query before sending it.
  3. Starting a fresh session completely clears the context window, preventing the model from referencing the looping text.

3. Toggle between Fun Mode and Regular Mode Grok operates under different system prompts depending on the selected mode. Fun Mode uses higher temperature settings (which increases randomness), while Regular Mode is more deterministic. A loop in one mode can sometimes be broken by switching to the other.

  1. Find the mode toggle switch at the bottom or top of your Grok chat interface.
  2. If you are in Fun Mode, switch to Regular Mode and re-run your prompt.
  3. If you are in Regular Mode, switch to Fun Mode temporarily to force more random token generation, then switch back if you prefer the standard output.

4. Specify formatting constraints in your prompt Sometimes Grok loops because it is trying to output structured data (like JSON, Markdown tables, or code blocks) and misses the "stop token" that signals the end of the block.

  1. Explicitly tell Grok how long the output should be. For example: "Limit your response to two paragraphs" or "Write exactly 150 words."
  2. If generating code, write: "Provide the complete code block once, and do not repeat any helper functions."
  3. These explicit constraints help the model locate its logical endpoints.

5. Clear browser cache and reset the X interface If the looping behavior looks more like a visual rendering glitch rather than a model generation issue (for example, the text keeps flashing or scrolling infinitely), the issue lies with your browser's DOM rendering of the X interface.

  1. Log out of your X / xAI account.
  2. Clear your browser's cookies and cached site data for x.com or grok.com.
  3. Close and reopen your browser, log back in, and try generating the response again.

Why does Grok get stuck in loops? Language models like Grok predict the next most likely word (token) based on probability. Sometimes, a specific sequence of words creates an accidental "trap" where the most statistically probable next token is one that was just written a few words ago. Once the model falls into this trap, it repeats the sequence. Because this sequence is now in its context history, the probability of repeating it again becomes nearly 100%. This is why manual intervention—like clearing the chat or editing your prompt—is necessary to break the cycle.

When to escalate If Grok continues to repeat itself across entirely different prompts, new chat sessions, and different devices, the issue is likely a backend model degradation or an active system outage at xAI. Check official status updates on X (via the `#Grok` or `#xAI` tags) to see if other users are reporting similar regressions. If you are using the Grok API, review your frequency penalty parameters in your API payload and increase the `frequency_penalty` or `presence_penalty` values to actively discourage repetitive outputs.
