Is Grok Down? How to Check xAI Status & Fix Errors
Updated 10/9/2026
When xAI’s Grok stops responding, gets stuck on a loading animation, or throws server errors, it can be frustrating. Because Grok is deeply integrated into the X (formerly Twitter) platform, troubleshooting an outage requires looking at both xAI's infrastructure and X's web delivery.
Unlike other major AI platforms, xAI does not maintain a traditional public status page. When the service goes offline, you have to use alternative methods to verify the outage. Follow this step-by-step guide to determine if Grok is down for everyone or if the issue is on your end.
1. Check Live Outage Reports on X
Since xAI does not host a dedicated system status dashboard, the fastest way to confirm a global outage is to check live user reports directly on X.
- Go to the search bar on X.
- Search for terms like "Grok down", "Grok error", or "#Grok" and filter by Latest.
- If you see dozens of users posting about blank screens, 503 errors, or frozen generations within the last few minutes, xAI is likely experiencing an outage.
- Check the official @Grok and @xai accounts on X for any scheduled maintenance or system issue announcements.
2. Check X Platform Status on Downdetector
Because Grok runs on X’s infrastructure, a partial outage on X's servers will often break Grok first.
- Visit a third-party monitoring site like Downdetector.
- Search for Twitter / X.
- Look at the live outage graph. A sudden spike in reported issues indicates that X’s backend servers (which host the Grok API) are struggling. If X is experiencing high latency, Grok prompts will time out before they can generate a response.
3. Inspect Your Browser for 5xx Server Errors
If you are getting a blank screen or Grok refuses to respond to prompts, you can check if your browser is successfully communicating with xAI's backend using your browser's Developer Tools.
- Press F12 (or right-click anywhere on the page and select Inspect).
- Click on the Network tab.
- Type a prompt into Grok and press Enter.
- Look for red lines in the Network log. If you see requests returning status codes like 500 (Internal Server Error), 502 (Bad Gateway), or 503 (Service Unavailable), the issue is entirely on the server side. You will need to wait for xAI's engineers to deploy a fix.
4. Clear Site Data and Cookies for X.com
If other users report that Grok is working fine, your browser may be stuck attempting to read a corrupted cache or expired session cookie.
- Click the padlock icon or site settings icon to the left of the URL in your browser's address bar.
- Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
- Click Clear data or delete all cookies associated with x.com and grok.com.
- Reload the page, sign back into your X account, and try launching Grok again.
5. Switch Between Web and Mobile Apps
Sometimes, a localized outage only affects the desktop web interface or the mobile API gateway.
- If you are using Grok on a desktop browser, open the X app on your iOS or Android device.
- Disconnect from your local Wi-Fi and switch to mobile data to rule out local network routing issues.
- If Grok works on your phone but not on your computer, the issue is related to your desktop browser, browser extensions (such as ad blockers), or local DNS cache. Try flushing your DNS by opening your terminal or command prompt and running ipconfig /flushdns (Windows) or sudo dscacheutil -flushcache (Mac).
6. Confirm Premium Subscription Status
Grok requires an active X Premium or Premium+ subscription. If your billing cycle recently ended or your payment failed, Grok may load as a blank screen or refuse to accept inputs without showing an explicit warning.
- Navigate to your X settings and select Premium.
- Check your subscription status and billing history to confirm your membership is still active.
- If your payment failed, update your card details to restore immediate access to Grok.
When to Escalate
If you have confirmed that there is no widespread outage, your billing is active, and clearing your cache does not resolve the issue, you may have an account-specific database error. Reach out to X Premium Support through the Help Center on X. Provide them with screenshots of any 5xx errors from your browser's Developer Tools console to speed up their investigation.
