How to Fix Higgsfield API Connection Refused Error
Updated 10/14/2026
A Connection Refused error (often surfaced as ECONNREFUSED in Node.js or ConnectionRefusedError in Python) occurs when your client application attempts to establish a connection with the Higgsfield API, but the handshake is rejected at the network level.
Unlike authentication errors, this issue means your request never actually reached the Higgsfield API servers for processing. It points to local network configurations, firewall rules, proxy blocks, or an incorrect API host URL.
Follow these steps to diagnose and resolve the connection refusal.
1. Verify the API Host and Base URL An incorrect base URL or scheme (e.g., using `http` instead of `https` or targeting a deprecated staging endpoint) will cause the connection to be immediately refused by the server or network gateway.
- Open your SDK initialization code or API request headers.
- Ensure the base URL points to the official production endpoint: https://api.higgsfield.ai (or the specific regional endpoint provided in your documentation).
- Double-check that you have not appended an incorrect port number to the host URL (e.g., api.higgsfield.ai:8080). Higgsfield uses standard HTTPS port 443.
- Check your environment variables. Ensure HIGGSFIELD_BASE_URL is set correctly and does not contain trailing slashes or hidden newline characters.
2. Test Local Network Resolution via CLI Determine if the issue lies within your application's network layer or your local system's DNS resolution.
1. Open your terminal or command prompt. 2. Run a ping or nslookup command to verify if your machine can resolve the Higgsfield API domain: `bash nslookup api.higgsfield.ai ` 3. If the resolution fails, your network's DNS server is unable to locate the domain. Switch to a public DNS provider like Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and try again. 4. Run a verbose curl command to check the TCP connection state: `bash curl -iv https://api.higgsfield.ai/v1/health ` If the output shows Connection refused before any SSL handshake occurs, a firewall or network proxy is actively blocking outbound traffic on port 443.
3. Configure Corporate Proxy and VPN Settings If you are running your application in a corporate sandbox, local container (Docker), or behind a VPN, outbound requests to external APIs are often blocked or redirected.
1. Set Proxy Environment Variables: If your network requires a proxy, configure your runtime environment so the SDK can route traffic through it: * Linux/macOS: `bash export HTTP_PROXY="http://your-proxy-server:port" export HTTPS_PROXY="http://your-proxy-server:port" ` * Windows (PowerShell): `powershell $env:HTTP_PROXY="http://your-proxy-server:port" $env:HTTPS_PROXY="http://your-proxy-server:port" ` 2. Verify Docker Network Modes: If running the SDK inside a Docker container, ensure the container has internet access. Try running the container with host networking enabled (--network host) to isolate network-virtualization bugs.
4. Allow Outbound Port 443 in Firewalls Cloud hosting providers (like AWS, GCP, or Azure) or local security software (like Windows Defender or Little Snitch) can block outbound TCP traffic.
- Security Groups: If running on AWS EC2 or ECS, check your Outbound Security Group rules. Ensure there is an egress rule allowing TCP traffic on port 443 to 0.0.0.0/0.
- Local Firewalls: Temporarily disable local firewall software to see if the connection is restored. If it is, create an explicit rule allowing outbound HTTPS traffic for your IDE, terminal, or Python/Node runtime binary.
5. Upgrade the Higgsfield SDK Older versions of the SDK may reference deprecated backend hostnames or IP ranges that have since been decommissioned, leading to refused connections.
1. Check your current SDK version. 2. Update to the latest stable release: * Python: `bash pip install --upgrade higgsfield ` * Node.js: `bash npm update higgsfield `
When to Escalate If you have verified that your network can successfully run `curl -iv https://api.higgsfield.ai` but your code continues to throw a connection refused error, the issue may be a localized platform outage or an IP block.
