Midjourney API Key Not Working: How to Fix 401 & 403

Updated 10/17/2026

Midjourney does not offer an official, public-facing REST API. Because of this, developers and teams connect to Midjourney using third-party API gateways (such as ImagineAPI, GoAPI, or Segmind) or by utilizing custom Discord automation scripts that interact with Midjourney's Discord bot interface.

When you encounter a "Midjourney API key not working" issue, or receive HTTP errors like 401 Unauthorized or 403 Forbidden, the root cause lies within either your third-party proxy's authorization layer or your Discord user token authentication. Follow this systematic troubleshooting guide to diagnose and repair your Midjourney API credential issues.

1. Verify Your Authorization Header Syntax

The most common cause of an invalid API key is a simple formatting error in your HTTP request headers. A single misplaced character will trigger a 401 Unauthorized status code.

1. Check for leading or trailing spaces in your API key string. Copy-pasting often introduces hidden whitespaces or newline characters. 2. Confirm the authorization scheme required by your API provider. Most third-party APIs require the Bearer schema. Your header must look like this: Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY_HERE 3. Ensure you have not stripped out the word Bearer if the provider's SDK expects a raw token but you are writing a manual HTTP request. 4. Verify the header key is spelled correctly: Authorization (not Authorisation or Auth-Key unless explicitly required by a specific third-party provider).

2. Refresh and Validate Your Discord User Token

If you are running a self-hosted API bridge or Discord automation tool (which simulates Discord slash commands), your "API key" is actually your Discord User Token. These tokens expire or invalidate frequently for security reasons.

  1. Log in to Discord via your web browser.
  2. Open your browser's Developer Tools (F12 or Cmd+Option+I), navigate to the Network tab, and filter by /api requests.
  3. Trigger any action (like sending a chat message or running a command) and locate the authorization header in the request details. This string is your active Discord User Token.
  4. If you recently changed your Discord password or enabled Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), your previous token was automatically invalidated. Update your configuration files or environment variables with the newly extracted token.
  5. Note: Automated use of Discord user accounts violates Discord's Terms of Service. If Discord flags your account as a self-bot, the token will be permanently disabled, resulting in persistent 401 and 403 errors.

3. Troubleshoot HTTP 401 vs. HTTP 403 Errors

Understanding the exact HTTP status code returned by your integration tells you exactly where the failure is occurring:

  • HTTP 401 Unauthorized: Your API key or Discord token is completely unrecognized, malformed, or has expired. The server does not know who you are. Re-generate the key or extract a new Discord token.
  • HTTP 403 Forbidden: The server recognizes your API key, but you do not have permission to perform the requested action. This occurs if:
  • Your third-party API account has run out of credits or has an unpaid invoice.
  • Your Midjourney subscription on Discord has expired or has been paused.
  • Your Discord account has been restricted or banned from the specific Midjourney server you are targeting.
  • The channel ID specified in your API request payload is incorrect, or your account lacks permission to view and send messages in that specific channel.

4. Test the API Key with a Minimal Curl Request

Isolate the issue from your application code or SDK. If the key fails in a simple shell request, the issue is with the key itself; if it succeeds, the issue lies in your application logic or SDK configuration.

Run a basic payload test using curl in your terminal:

`bash curl -X POST https://api.your-provider.com/v1/imagine \ -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d '{"prompt": "a minimalist workspace, cinematic lighting --ar 16:9"}' `

Replace https://api.your-provider.com/v1/imagine with your specific API gateway endpoint and insert your actual key. If this returns a 200 OK or 202 Accepted status, your API key is fully functional, and you must debug your SDK integration or code framework.

5. Address SDK and Dependency Version Mismatches

If you are using an open-source Midjourney API client library (such as those found on npm or PyPI), the library may have broken due to undocumented changes in Discord’s API payload structures or gateway updates.

  1. Check the repository of the SDK you are using for recent open issues regarding authentication or connection failures.
  2. Update your SDK dependencies to the absolute latest version using your package manager (e.g., npm update or pip install --upgrade).
  3. Ensure your local environment's Node.js or Python version matches the engine specifications listed in the SDK's documentation.

When to Escalate

  • For third-party API gateways: If your billing is up to date and your curl test still returns a 401 or 403, check the status page of your API provider. If their servers are operational, open a support ticket directly with that provider's support team.
  • For Discord-based automation: If your user token keeps invalidating or returning 403 errors, check if your Discord account has been rate-limited or flagged. Log into the Discord client manually to see if you are prompted to solve a CAPTCHA.
