Fix Midjourney Blank Responses & No Output
Updated 10/7/2026
When you send a prompt to Midjourney and receive an empty message, a blank block, or no reply at all, it usually indicates a breakdown in communication between Discord's interface and Midjourney's image generation clusters. Because Midjourney relies heavily on Discord's API to deliver rich embeds (which contain the generated grid of four images), any permission mismatch, server lag, or regional outage can prevent the final image from rendering.
This issue can also manifest on the standalone Midjourney web platform as an endless loading skeleton or a blank grid card. Follow this systematic troubleshooting guide to isolate and resolve the issue.
Step 1: Check Midjourney and Discord Server Status
Before changing any local settings, confirm if the platform is experiencing a wider outage.
- Open the official Midjourney Discord Server and navigate to the #status channel. The development team posts real-time updates regarding database migrations, GPU cluster outages, and API degradation here.
- Check the #announcements channel for scheduled maintenance notices.
- Visit external status trackers or Discord's official status page (discordstatus.com). If Discord's "Bot API" or "Media Delivery" services are degraded, Midjourney will fail to deliver completed images, resulting in blank responses or silent failures.
Step 2: Verify Discord Channel and Bot Permissions
If the status pages are green but you receive blank outputs in a private server, the Midjourney Bot likely lacks the necessary Discord permissions to display image embeds.
- Right-click the channel where you are prompting and select Edit Channel.
- Click Permissions and select Midjourney Bot (or @everyone if permissions are inherited).
- Ensure the following permissions are explicitly set to green checkmarks (Enabled):
- View Channel
- Send Messages
- Embed Links (Crucial: without this, Midjourney's response box will appear completely blank)
- Attach Files (Crucial: without this, the generated image file cannot be uploaded to Discord's CDN)
- Read Message History
- Save changes, restart your Discord client, and attempt a new prompt.
Step 3: Clear Discord Client Cache and Force Restart
A corrupted local cache can prevent Discord from downloading and rendering the image attachments sent by the bot.
- For Desktop (Windows): Close Discord completely from your system tray. Press Win + R, type %appdata%, and hit Enter. Locate the discord folder and delete the Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache folders. Restart Discord.
- For Desktop (macOS): Fully quit Discord. Open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G, type ~/Library/Application Support/discord/, and delete the cache folders.
- For Mobile (Android/iOS): Go to your device's App Settings, select Discord, and choose Clear Cache. Re-open the app.
Step 4: Toggle Direct Messages (DMs)
If channel-level permission configurations are too complex or broken, you can bypass them by interacting with the bot in your Direct Messages.
- Find the Midjourney Bot in your Discord member list on any server.
- Right-click the bot and select Message.
- Send a test prompt like /imagine prompt a simple blue sphere.
- If the image renders correctly in your DMs but remains blank in servers, the issue lies entirely with server-specific configurations or Discord integration limits.
Step 5: Resolve Web App Rendering Failures
If you are using the Midjourney web alpha portal (midjourney.com) and images load as blank squares, your browser is likely struggling to render the WebGL canvas elements or blocking Midjourney's content delivery networks.
- Disable any active ad-blockers, tracking blockers, or strict privacy extensions (such as uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger) for the Midjourney domain.
- Open your browser settings and verify that Hardware Acceleration is enabled.
- Clear your browser's site data specifically for Midjourney: Click the padlock icon in the URL bar, select Site settings, and click Clear data.
- Test the platform in an Incognito/Private window to rule out conflicting extension scripts.
When to Escalate
If you have completed these steps and Midjourney still returns blank responses or fails to acknowledge your /imagine prompts at all, check your subscription status. Users with lapsed subscriptions or exhausted GPU hours may occasionally experience silent failures instead of the standard "subscription required" warning when the system is under heavy load.
If your billing is active and the system status is normal, navigate to the #member-support channel in the official Midjourney Discord. Describe your platform (Discord Desktop, Web, or Mobile) and note that you have already verified your channel embed permissions.
