Midjourney Defaulting to Wrong Version: How to Fix

Updated 10/11/2026

Midjourney regularly updates its default model version (such as moving from v5.2 to v6 or v6.1). When these server-side shifts occur, or when your Discord user settings reset unexpectedly, you may notice a sudden drop in image quality, a loss of photorealism, or a failure to follow prompts. This typically happens because Midjourney has quietly reverted your generations to an older model version.

Here is a step-by-step troubleshooting guide to diagnose why Midjourney is defaulting to the wrong version and how to lock in your preferred model settings.

1. Verify and Reset Your Global Settings

The most common cause of a version mismatch is a silent reset of your personal user settings. This can happen after Midjourney platform updates or Discord client refreshes.

  1. Type /settings in your Discord chat box where the Midjourney bot is active and press Enter.
  2. Look at the grid of buttons that appears. The active model version will be highlighted in green (for example, "Midjourney Model V6.1" or "Midjourney Model V6").
  3. If an older version like "Midjourney Model V5.2" or "Niji Model V6" is highlighted, click the button for your preferred current version to select it.
  4. Ensure "Raw Mode" or "Stylize" preferences are set correctly, as these also reset when the model version changes.
  5. Test your generation again without adding any manual version parameters.

2. Check for Active Custom Suffixes

If you previously set a permanent suffix that forces an older model, Midjourney will append it to every prompt you type, overriding your global settings panel.

  1. Type /settings again and check the message output. If a suffix is active, it will display at the top of the settings block.
  2. Alternatively, use the command /prefer suffix and leave the value field completely blank, then press Enter. This completely clears any hidden parameters being automatically tacked onto the end of your prompts.
  3. If you use custom option shortcuts, type /prefer option list to view all saved shortcuts. Delete or update any options that contain outdated --v or --version parameters.

3. Explicitly Define Version Parameters

If the global settings fail to stick, you can override Midjourney's default behavior manually within your prompt syntax.

  1. Write your image prompt as usual.
  2. At the very end of the prompt, add a space followed by the version parameter, such as --v 6.1 or --v 6.0.
  3. If you want to use the anime-focused model, use --niji 6.
  4. Do not combine conflicting version parameters (for example, writing --v 6 --v 5.2 in the same prompt). If Midjourney detects multiple version tags, it will either throw an error or default to the lowest or first parameter it reads.

4. Resolve Discord Client Sync Issues

Sometimes, the Midjourney bot is processing your requests correctly, but your local Discord client is displaying cached, outdated button configurations in the /settings menu.

  1. If you are on the Discord desktop app, force-refresh the client by pressing Ctrl + R on Windows or Cmd + R on Mac.
  2. If you are using Discord on a mobile device, force-close the app, clear the app cache in your device settings, and reopen it.
  3. Check if you are interacting with the bot in a private Direct Message (DM) versus a public server. Settings adjusted in a server environment sometimes fail to sync immediately to your private DM thread with the bot.

5. Audit Your Prompt for Legacy Parameters

Some parameters are model-specific. If you use a parameter that is incompatible with the latest version, Midjourney may automatically downgrade your request to an older version that supports it.

  1. Check if you are using --creative or older --style commands. These parameters behave differently or are completely unsupported in newer versions.
  2. Ensure your aspect ratios (--ar) are supported by the model version you are requesting. Extremely wide aspect ratios can sometimes cause generation errors or default fallbacks on older models.
  3. Simplify your prompt down to basic text, append --v 6.1, and see if the output quality recovers. If it does, reintroduce your parameters one by one to find the conflicting tag.

When to Escalate

If you have cleared your suffixes, forced the --v parameter, verified /settings, and Midjourney still outputs images from an older engine, check the official Midjourney Discord status channel. During major server migrations or high-traffic outages, Midjourney may temporarily route jobs to legacy clusters or disable newer engines to manage server load. If no widespread outage is reported, post a query in the #member-support channel on the official Midjourney Discord server for direct developer assistance.
