Fix: Midjourney Failed to Start Prompt Error
Updated 10/6/2026
Have you typed out a prompt, hit enter, and watched it immediately return a 'Failed to start prompt' or 'Interaction failed' error? This issue is one of the most common disruptions when using Midjourney. It typically indicates a breakdown in communication between your Discord client, Midjourney's bot, and the backend GPU generation cluster.
While it is frustrating, the problem is rarely permanent. Follow this troubleshooting sequence to diagnose the root cause and restore your image generation queue.
1. Check for Midjourney and Discord Server Outages Before modifying your settings, verify if the issue is a widespread outage. Because Midjourney relies heavily on Discord's infrastructure, an outage on either platform can block prompts from starting.
- Check Discord Status: Visit discordstatus.com to check if there are API outages or issues with gateway connections. If Discord is experiencing 'degraded performance,' bot interactions will fail.
- Check Midjourney Status: Look at the #status channel in the official Midjourney Discord server. If there is a database migration, host migration, or unplanned database outage, the team will post updates here.
- Check Web Status Pages: You can also check independent uptime trackers or Midjourney's official status page if you have web access.
If a system-wide outage is occurring, you must wait for the developers to deploy a hotfix.
2. Verify Your Account Status and Queue Limits If the servers are fully operational, the error might be triggered by your specific account state. An expired subscription or a clogged queue can silently reject new generations.
- Go to any chat channel where the Midjourney bot is present.
- Type /info and press Enter.
- Wait for the bot to return your profile details.
- Check your Subscription Status to ensure it is active.
- Check your Jobs count. If you have reached your maximum concurrent jobs (typically 3 active jobs in Fast Mode for standard plans), any additional prompt may fail instantly rather than queuing properly.
If your queue is full, let the existing images finish generating before sending new prompts.
3. Switch Your Generation Channel or DM the Bot High-traffic channels in the official Midjourney server can experience lag spikes that drop commands. Moving your workspace to a quieter environment often bypasses this congestion.
- Direct Messages (DMs): Click on the Midjourney bot's icon and send your /imagine command in a private direct message. DMs have a dedicated processing queue that is less prone to channel-specific lag.
- Private Server: If you have added the Midjourney bot to your own Discord server, try generating there. If the bot fails in your private server but works in DMs, kick the bot from your server and re-invite it using the official authorization link from the member list.
4. Clear Discord Cache and Force Restart Sometimes, your local Discord application fails to send the slash-command payload to the bot. This is common on both desktop and mobile applications after a long session.
On Desktop (Windows/Mac): 1. Fully close Discord (on Windows, close it from the system tray; on Mac, use Cmd + Q). 2. Open your Run dialog (Win + R) on Windows, type `%appdata%`, locate the `discord` folder, and delete the `Cache` folder inside. 3. On Mac, clear your application cache in `~/Library/Application Support/discord/`. 4. Relaunch Discord and attempt the prompt again.
On Mobile: 1. Force stop the Discord app from your system settings. 2. Clear the app storage/cache. 3. Re-open the app and type the prompt manually (do not copy-paste long prompts, as this can sometimes trigger input errors).
5. Switch Generation Modes If your current generation mode is experiencing a cluster failure, toggling your settings can route your request to a different server group.
- Type /settings in your prompt window and hit enter.
- If you are currently generating in Fast Mode, toggle to Relax Mode (or vice versa, if your plan supports it).
- Change your default engine version (e.g., switch from V6 to V5.2) temporarily to check if the error is version-specific.
- Try running a basic prompt like /imagine prompt apple to see if complex formatting or blocked words in your original prompt were causing a silent rejection.
When to Escalate If you have verified that Midjourney is online, your subscription is active, your queue is empty, and you still receive the error across DMs and multiple servers, you may need official assistance.
As an independent troubleshooting site, we cannot access your Midjourney billing account or reset your backend queues. To get direct help, navigate to the official Midjourney Discord server and post your issue in the #member-support channel. System moderators there can manually reset hung jobs on your account if your queue has become corrupted.
