Midjourney generating low quality images: How to fix

Updated 9/24/2026

If your Midjourney outputs suddenly look worse than before—blurry, overly distorted, cartoony, or lacking detail—you are likely experiencing a configuration override rather than a permanent system downgrade. Midjourney regularly updates its default models, which can cause older prompt structures to break or trigger unexpected render behaviors.

Follow these practical steps to troubleshoot and restore high-quality outputs.

1. Verify Your Midjourney Model Version When Midjourney updates its default engine (e.g., from V5 to V6), your prompts might automatically run on the new model. Prompts written for V5 often produce poor, messy results in V6 because V6 requires more literal, descriptive language rather than abstract buzzwords.

  1. Type /settings in your Discord server or prompt bar and press Enter.
  2. Look at the active model version highlighted in green.
  3. If you want to use a specific older version, select it from the buttons (e.g., Midjourney Model V5.2).
  4. Alternatively, force a model version in your text prompt by appending the version suffix (e.g., --v 5.2 or --v 6.0) to the very end of your prompt.

2. Reset Style and Parameter Settings High values on stylize, weirdness, or chaos parameters can severely degrade image quality, making generations look warped, chaotic, or poorly rendered.

  1. Check your prompt for --stylize (or --s), --weird (or --w), or --chaos (or --c) parameters.
  2. Open /settings and verify if Style Med or Style High is selected. If Style Very High is selected, images can sometimes look over-processed.
  3. Reset your parameters back to default values to test baseline quality:
  4. Set stylize to default: --s 100
  5. Set weirdness to default: --w 0
  6. Set chaos to default: --c 0

3. Remove Prompt Clutter and "Buzzwords" Older Midjourney versions relied on descriptive keywords to boost quality. Modern models (V6 and Niji 6) interpret these words literally, which often corrupts the final image with unwanted elements or muddy textures.

  1. Strip your prompt of generic quality buzzwords such as "photorealistic," "hyperrealistic," "ultra-detailed," "8K," and "unreal engine."
  2. Focus on clear, literal descriptions of the subject, lighting, and medium (e.g., "A studio portrait of a woman, soft natural side-light, shot on 35mm film").
  3. Keep your prompt concise. Extremely long prompts cause Midjourney to lose context, leading to unfinished or poorly composed details.

4. Toggle Raw Style for Photorealism If your photorealistic images look overly plastic, artificial, or stylized, Midjourney's default aesthetic tuning may be working against you.

  1. Add the --style raw parameter to the end of your prompt.
  2. This parameter bypasses Midjourney's default artistic embellishments, forcing the model to stick closer to your literal text description and producing a cleaner, more realistic photographic finish.

5. Check Aspect Ratio and Upscale Settings Stretching an image to extreme aspect ratios can cause Midjourney to duplicate subjects, create weird anatomical distortions, or lower the overall resolution.

  1. Avoid extreme aspect ratios like --ar 21:9 if you are getting distorted anatomy. Stick to safer ratios like --ar 16:9 or --ar 4:3 for testing.
  2. If the initial grid looks good but the upscale looks bad, avoid the "Subtle" or "Creative" upscalers if they distort details. Use the Vary (Subtle) button or download the original grid image directly if you prefer the un-upscaled version.

When to Escalate If you have reset your settings, stripped your prompts, and are still receiving low-resolution or heavily corrupted images across multiple prompts, Midjourney may be experiencing an active rendering node outage. Check the `#status` channel in the official Midjourney Discord. If there are no reported system issues, write `/feedback` in Discord or contact helper moderators in the `#member-support` channel for account-specific rendering errors.
