Midjourney Images Look Worse Now: Fix Quality Regression
Updated 10/2/2026
If you have noticed that your Midjourney outputs suddenly look blurry, overly cartoonish, low-detail, or simply worse than they did previously, you are likely experiencing a settings mismatch or a model version shift. Midjourney regularly updates its default algorithms, which can abruptly change how your preferred prompts are interpreted.
Fortunately, quality regressions are rarely permanent. They are almost always caused by changes in default parameters, active style settings, or the way newer model versions process your prompt text. Follow this guide to diagnose and fix the issue.
Why Your Midjourney Images Suddenly Look Worse
When Midjourney updates its default model (for example, shifting the default from v5.2 to v6), the AI processes prompting logic differently. What worked perfectly in an older version might generate chaotic, low-quality, or plastic-looking results in a newer version.
The most common culprits behind a sudden drop in generation quality include: * Automatic Model Migrations: Midjourney may have updated its default system model, rendering your legacy prompts less effective. * Low Stylize Values: A low default stylize setting can lead to literal, unpolished, and plain generations. * Unexpected Aesthetic Filters: Newer models tend to be more sensitive to aesthetic stylization, requiring more precise prompting. * Incorrect Aspect Ratios: Using high aspect ratios (like --ar 16:9 or wider) on models that struggle with composition without structural prompts.
How to Fix Midjourney Quality Degradation
1. Lock in Your Preferred Model Version Do not rely on Midjourney’s default model settings, as these change during system updates. If you liked the outputs you were getting previously, manually set your model.
- Type /settings in your Discord server or direct message with the Midjourney Bot and press Enter.
- Check which model version is active. If Midjourney Model V6 is selected but your prompts were optimized for V5.2, click the V5.2 button to revert.
- Alternatively, manually append the model version parameter to the end of every prompt. For example, add --v 5.2 or --v 6.0 to the very end of your text input.
2. Enable or Disable Raw Mode Midjourney’s default tuning adds a lot of automatic embellishment to images. If your images look overly dramatic, fake, or do not match your prompt, try Raw Mode. Conversely, if your images look too plain, turn Raw Mode off.
- To activate Raw Mode globally, type /settings and click the Raw Mode button.
- To apply it to a single prompt, add --style raw to the end of your prompt.
- *Note:* Raw Mode works best with newer models like V6 and V5.2 to strip away the built-in photographic or artistic bias, giving you cleaner, more accurate compositions.
3. Adjust the Stylize Parameter (`--s`) The stylize parameter determines how strongly Midjourney applies its own artistic training to your prompt. * **If images look too plain or low-resolution:** Increase the stylize value. The default is `100`. Try adding `--s 250` or `--s 750` to the end of your prompt to inject more detail and polish. * **If images look too chaotic or distorted:** Decrease the stylize value. Try adding `--s 50` or `--s 0` to stick closer to your literal text.
4. Reset User Settings and Preferences Sometimes, hidden suffix settings or test features get stuck in your Discord profile. Resetting your defaults will clear out conflicting parameters.
- Type /prefer suffix and leave the value field completely blank, then press Enter. This clears any hidden parameters automatically appended to your prompts.
- Type /settings and ensure your settings match standard defaults:
- High Variation Mode or Low Variation Mode
- Base Quality
- Style Med (Stylize 100)
5. Adapt Your Prompting Style to the Active Model If you are using Midjourney V6, it requires a completely different prompting style than V5. V5 relied on comma-separated buzzwords (e.g., "photorealistic, 8k, Unreal Engine, highly detailed"). V6 treats these buzzwords as noise and will often output worse, muddy, or confused images when they are used.
- Write in clear, natural sentences instead of tags.
- Instead of "hyperrealistic," write "A clean, sharp photograph taken on a 35mm lens."
- Remove fluff words like "photorealistic", "ultra hd", and "hyper-detailed".
When to Escalate
If your generations suddenly look highly pixelated, exhibit severe green or purple color banding, or fail to complete rendering beyond 90%, there may be a platform-wide outage or GPU rendering bug. Check the official status page or the #status channel in the Midjourney Discord. If the platform is operating normally but your account continues to generate broken or corrupted images, navigate to the #member-support channel on the official Midjourney Discord server to report the issue to community helpers.
