Midjourney Prompt Weights Not Working: How to Fix

Updated 10/17/2026

If you are trying to use multi-prompts in Midjourney to balance different elements of your image, you might find that the model is completely ignoring your instructions or, worse, literally drawing the numbers you typed.

When prompt weights fail, it is usually due to subtle syntax errors that cause Midjourney to read your weights as standard text, or because your weights are so unbalanced that the model defaults to rendering only one element.

Follow this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to fix Midjourney prompt weights and regain control over your image composition.

How to Fix Prompt Weights Not Working

1. Fix Your Double Colon Syntax The most common reason Midjourney ignores prompt weights is incorrect spacing around the double colon (`::`). Midjourney is highly sensitive to how colons are spaced.

  • The Correct Format: text::weight (e.g., space ship::2 astronaut::1). Note that there are no spaces immediately before or after the double colon, but there is a space *after* the weight number before the next term starts.
  • The Wrong Format: space ship :: 2 or space ship:: 2. If you add a space between the colons and the number, Midjourney will treat the double colon as a normal separator and render the number "2" literally in your image.
  • Default Weights: If you use a double colon without a number (e.g., space ship:: astronaut), Midjourney automatically assigns a weight of 1 to both parts.

2. Balance Extreme Weight Ratios Midjourney weights are relative, not absolute. If you set one element to `::10` and another to `::1`, the first element is ten times more important than the second.

  • Avoid Over-Weighting: Using extreme weights like ::100 or ::50 often breaks the model's canvas generation, causing highly distorted, blown-out, or completely blank images.
  • Keep Ratios Low: It is best practice to keep your weights between -1 and 3. If you want an element to be twice as prominent, use ::2 and ::1 rather than ::20 and ::10. The simpler the math, the easier it is for the model to parse.

3. Ensure Total Prompt Weights Are Positive You can use negative weights to remove unwanted objects or color casts from your generations. However, the sum of all weights in your prompt must always be positive.

  • If you write red hair::-0.5 blue background::-1.5, the total sum of your weights is negative (-2.0). This prompt will fail instantly and return an error message.
  • To fix this, ensure you have a strong positive anchor. For example: portrait of a woman::2 red hair::-0.5 has a total sum of 1.5, which will run successfully.

4. Switch Between Midjourney v5 and v6 Rules If you recently upgraded to Midjourney v6, you might notice that your old prompt weighting strategies no longer work.

  • V5 behavior: Highly receptive to heavy weighting, fine-grained multi-prompting, and structural styling hacks.
  • V6 behavior: Uses a much more advanced natural language processor. V6 understands sentence structures and context better than explicit mathematical weights. If you apply too many :: weights in v6, you might confuse the language model.
  • The Fix: If your weighted prompt is failing in v6, try writing it as a descriptive sentence first (e.g., "A portrait of a woman with subtle hints of red in her hair, against a blue background") instead of using multi-prompts. If you must use strict weights, append --v 5.2 to the end of your prompt to force Midjourney to use the older engine.

5. Check for Clashing Parameters Certain parameters can override or interfere with your prompt weights.

  • Using the --no parameter is shorthand for assigning a negative weight of -0.5 to an item. If you combine --no red with a manual prompt weight like red::-1, you may trigger a parsing conflict. Use one method or the other, but not both.
  • Ensure your weights are placed *before* any parameters like --ar, --stylize, or --chaos. Parameters must always go at the very end of the prompt, after all text and weights.

Why Are Numbers Appearing in My Images? If Midjourney is literally drawing numbers (like "2" or "3") on your canvas, it means the parser did not recognize your double colons as a weighting command. This happens if:

  • You used single colons (:) instead of double colons (::).
  • You added a space between the colons and the number.
  • You placed a weight at the very end of the prompt without specifying what it applies to.

Double-check your prompt text character by character to ensure no stray spaces or typos exist around your colons.

When to Escalate If Midjourney continues to ignore basic weights, or if your prompts fail to generate entirely despite correct syntax, there may be a platform-wide issue.

  • Check Discord Status: Look at the #status channel in the official Midjourney Discord server to see if there are active database or parsing outages.
  • Use Member Support: If you believe your account's generation behavior is bugged, post your exact prompt in the #member-support Discord channel. Community moderators can review your syntax to identify hidden formatting bugs.
