Midjourney SDK Integration Failed: How to Fix

Updated 10/3/2026

Integrating Midjourney into your application or workflow often presents unique technical challenges. Because Midjourney does not offer an official, publicly documented REST API, developers rely on third-party SDK wrappers, Discord bot integrations, or automation tools to generate images programmatically. When these integrations fail, it is usually due to authentication mismatches, Discord gateway changes, or unhandled payload structures.

If your Midjourney SDK integration is failing, throwing connection timeouts, or returning unexpected errors, follow these sequential steps to debug and resolve the issue.

1. Verify Authentication Credentials and Headers Most integration failures stem from incorrect or expired authentication tokens. Depending on your setup (e.g., using a third-party API proxy or a self-hosted Discord automation library), your authentication requirements will differ.

  1. Check API Keys or User Tokens: Ensure your user token (if automating Discord interactions) or your third-party provider's API key is correctly loaded into your environment variables.
  2. Inspect Request Headers: Verify that headers like Authorization are properly formatted. For example, some SDKs require the Bot prefix for bot accounts, while user-token automation requires a raw authorization header.
  3. Validate Session Expiration: Discord user tokens change when you reset your password or enable/disable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). If your integration suddenly stopped working, regenerate and replace your token.

2. Check Discord Channel and Guild IDs Midjourney commands must run in a specific environment. If your SDK points to the wrong channel, the bot will ignore the payload.

  1. Enable Developer Mode: In your Discord settings, go to Advanced and toggle on Developer Mode.
  2. Copy IDs Exactly: Right-click your target Discord server (guild) and copy the ID. Do the same for the specific text channel where Midjourney is authorized to post.
  3. Update Configuration: Ensure your SDK's configuration file or initialization script contains these precise IDs. A single missing digit will cause 404 Not Found or 403 Forbidden errors.

3. Handle Cloudflare and Discord Rate Limits If your SDK is sending too many concurrent requests, Discord or the third-party proxy will block your connection.

  1. Identify HTTP 429 Errors: If you see 429 Too Many Requests, your script is exceeding the rate limits.
  2. Implement Exponential Backoff: Adjust your SDK integration code to catch 429 status codes. Write a retry mechanism that waits for the duration specified in the Retry-After header before sending the next command.
  3. Add Jitter: Introduce a random delay (between 1 and 3 seconds) between your image generation requests to prevent triggering automated spam filters.

4. Resolve Gateway WebSocket Disconnections Many Node.js or Python SDKs rely on active WebSocket connections to listen for Midjourney's completion events (when the image finishes rendering).

  1. Keep-Alives (Heartbeats): Ensure your SDK's WebSocket connection is sending regular heartbeat payloads. If the connection idles for more than a few minutes, Discord drops it, causing your script to hang.
  2. Implement Auto-Reconnect: Configure your WebSocket client to automatically reconnect on a close event code (such as 1006 or 4000).
  3. Fallback to Polling: If the WebSocket remains unstable, modify your integration to poll the channel's message history via HTTP GET requests every 10–15 seconds to check if the generated image is ready.

5. Standardize Prompt Formatting and Payload Structure Midjourney’s backend parses prompts strictly. If your SDK formats the JSON payload incorrectly, the request will fail silently or return a `400 Bad Request`.

  1. Sanitize Inputs: Strip out illegal characters, emojis, or unsupported parameters from your programmatically generated prompts.
  2. Verify JSON Key Names: Double-check that your payloads match the current version of the Discord Interactions API or your provider’s schema (e.g., using application_id, guild_id, channel_id, session_id, and data).
  3. Limit Payload Size: Ensure your image URLs (used in image-to-image prompts) are clean, publicly accessible, and do not make the overall payload string excessively long.

When to Escalate Because Midjourney does not officially support developer APIs or programmatic automation, their official customer support channels cannot assist with custom SDK or script failures.

If you are using a commercial third-party Midjourney API wrapper, check their status page or contact their dedicated developer support team. If you are using an open-source library, check the active "Issues" tab on the library’s GitHub repository to see if a recent Discord API update has broken the package, requiring you to update your dependency.
