Midjourney Style Reference Not Working: How to Fix

Updated 10/8/2026

Midjourney’s style reference feature (--sref) is a powerful tool for maintaining visual consistency across your generated images. However, when Midjourney ignores your style reference, alters it beyond recognition, or returns formatting errors, it disrupts your workflow.

This behavior usually stems from minor syntax mistakes, inaccessible image URLs, incorrect prompt structure, or using style references with incompatible model versions. Here is how to diagnose and resolve issues with Midjourney style references.

1. Verify Your Parameter Syntax Midjourney is highly sensitive to syntax formatting. If a single space or hyphen is misplaced, the Discord bot will either ignore the style reference completely or fail to generate the image.

To correct your prompt syntax: 1. Place parameters at the very end: Your text description must come first, followed by the --sref parameter, and then the image URL. * *Incorrect:* --sref https://example.com/image.jpg a futuristic city * *Correct:* a futuristic city --sref https://example.com/image.jpg 2. Check your hyphens: Ensure you are using two standard keyboard hyphens (--) rather than an em-dash (—), which often auto-formats on mobile devices and tablet keyboards. 3. Add spaces correctly: There must be a space before the hyphens and a space between --sref and the URL. If you are using multiple style references, separate the URLs with a single space: --sref URL1 URL2.

2. Check Image URL Accessibility and Formatting Midjourney needs to parse the reference image directly from its hosting source. If the image link is broken, private, or formatted incorrectly, the style reference will fail.

  1. Use direct image links: The URL must point directly to an image file, not a general web page containing the image. The URL should ideally end in a standard image extension like .jpg, .jpeg, .png, or .webp.
  2. Test the link in private browsing: Copy your image URL and open it in an Incognito/Private browser window. If the page prompts you to log in (common with Google Drive, Pinterest, or private Discord servers), Midjourney cannot access it.
  3. Host images reliably: Use trusted public hosts like Imgur, or upload the image directly to Discord, copy the link (right-click the image -> Copy Link), and use that URL. Ensure you use "Copy Link" and not "Copy Message Link."

3. Ensure Model Version Compatibility Style references do not work across all Midjourney model versions. If you are trying to use `--sref` on an older legacy model, the system will ignore the parameter or generate a generic fallback style.

  1. Check your current model: Type /settings in Discord and ensure you have V6 or Niji 6 selected.
  2. Force the version via prompt: If your default setting is set to an older version, add --v 6 or --niji 6 to the end of your prompt alongside your style reference.
  3. *Example:* a medieval knight --sref https://example.com/art.jpg --v 6

4. Adjust the Style Weight Parameter If Midjourney processes the prompt but the resulting image looks nothing like your reference, the style weight might be set too low, or you may need to artificially boost it to overpower the text prompt.

  1. Add the style weight parameter: Use --sw followed by a number to control how closely Midjourney adheres to the reference style.
  2. Increase the value: The default style weight is 100. You can set the weight anywhere from 0 to 1000. If the style is barely noticeable, try raising it to a higher threshold.
  3. *Example:* cyberpunk street --sref https://example.com/neon.jpg --sw 800

5. Differentiate Image Prompts from Style References It is common to confuse standard image prompts with style references. They function differently and belong in different parts of the prompt structure.

  1. Image Prompts (Composition & Subject): These are placed at the very beginning of the prompt. They tell Midjourney to copy the composition, shapes, or subjects of the source image.
  2. *Structure:* [Image URL] [Text Prompt]
  3. Style References (Aesthetic & Color): These use --sref and are placed at the end. They tell Midjourney to copy the color palette, lighting, texture, and artistic medium without copying the actual subject.
  4. *Structure:* [Text Prompt] --sref [Image URL]

When to Escalate If you have confirmed your syntax is correct, the image URL is publicly accessible, and you are using V6, but your style references still fail to apply, check the official Midjourney Discord status channels. Temporary API lag, Discord image delivery outages, or backend updates can occasionally cause style reference parsing to time out. If the issue persists across all images, describe your problem in the `#member-support` Discord channel.
