Midjourney Taking Too Long to Generate? How to Fix
Updated 10/6/2026
When Midjourney takes an unusually long time to generate images—or seems stuck at 0% rendering indefinitely—it is rarely a random glitch. Typically, slow generation speeds are caused by your subscription tier's GPU hour limits, queue congestion, heavy prompt parameters, or Discord interface lag.
Follow these practical troubleshooting steps to diagnose why Midjourney is running slowly and how to restore normal generation speeds.
1. Check Your Remaining Fast Hours
The most common reason for a sudden drop in generation speed is that you have exhausted your monthly allocation of "Fast" GPU hours. When your Fast hours run out, Midjourney automatically downgrades your account to "Relax" mode. In Relax mode, your jobs are placed in a dynamic queue that can take anywhere from 2 minutes to over 10 minutes per generation, depending on system-wide load.
- Go to any Discord channel where you can prompt the Midjourney bot.
- Type /info and press Enter.
- Look at the status message returned by the bot.
- Check the Fast GPU Time Remaining field.
- If your Fast hours are depleted (showing 0.0/hr), you are operating in Relax mode.
- To restore immediate speeds, you can switch back to Fast mode if you still have hours left by typing /fast. If you are completely out, you must wait for your monthly renewal or purchase additional Fast hours via your Midjourney account dashboard.
2. Check and Clear Your Active Queue
Midjourney limits the number of concurrent jobs you can run at one time. If you submit too many prompts in rapid succession, subsequent prompts will sit in a "Waiting to start" state until active jobs finish.
- Run the /info command in Discord.
- Look at the Queued Jobs and Running Jobs counts.
- Midjourney typically allows a maximum of 3 active jobs in Fast mode and up to 3 (or more, depending on your plan) in Relax mode.
- If your queue is full of stalled or unwanted generations, you must cancel them. Find the active generation in your Discord chat history and click the Red X (Cancel) emoji reaction. If the emoji is not visible, react to the message with the :x: emoji to manually force-cancel the job and clear your queue.
3. Bypass Discord UI Lag with a Direct Message
Sometimes, Midjourney has actually finished generating your image, but the Discord channel you are using is experiencing severe lag. This is common in high-traffic public server channels (like the #newbies channels).
- Navigate to your Discord Direct Messages.
- Find the Midjourney Bot in your direct message list.
- Send your /imagine prompts directly to the bot in this private chat.
- Processing generations in a private DM bypasses the visual noise and message rendering lag of public servers, resulting in a much faster, more reliable visual update as your image renders.
4. Simplify Resource-Intensive Parameters
Certain advanced prompt parameters require significantly more processing power and can prolong render times, even when you are in Fast mode.
- Check your Aspect Ratio (--ar): Extreme aspect ratios (e.g., --ar 20:1 or --ar 1:20) take longer to compute than standard ratios like --ar 16:9 or --ar 1:1.
- Avoid heavy Upscales or Zooms: Using options like Vary (Strong), Zoom Out 2x, or Upscale (Creative) initiates brand new, resource-heavy rendering pipelines. Keep your initial generations basic before applying these options.
- Disable Tile Parameter (--tile): Generating seamless patterns with the --tile parameter requires additional tiling logic that can add processing overhead. Use it sparingly if speeds are slow.
5. Verify Midjourney and Discord Server Status
If you have plenty of Fast hours, your queue is empty, and you are using standard parameters but generations still stall, the Midjourney clusters may be experiencing an outage or high-load event.
- Join the official Midjourney Discord Server.
- Navigate to the #status channel.
- Check the most recent announcements for system-wide performance degradation, database migrations, or GPU cluster maintenance.
- If an outage is reported, you must wait for the engineering team to resolve the infrastructure load issue.
When to escalate
If /info confirms you have active Fast hours, your queue is completely clear, there are no reported system outages in the #status channel, and your jobs still remain stuck at 0% for more than 15 minutes, the Midjourney bot instance in your current server may be unresponsive.
To resolve this, kick the Midjourney bot from your private server and re-invite it via the Midjourney member list, or bypass the server entirely by using the official Midjourney web alpha interface (if you have generated over 100 images and have access) to see if the web-based generator bypasses the Discord bottleneck.
