How to Fix ChatGPT 502 Bad Gateway Error

Updated 10/12/2026

A 502 Bad Gateway error on ChatGPT indicates that one server on the internet received an invalid response from another server. When you see this error while trying to access ChatGPT, it usually means OpenAI’s edge servers or Content Delivery Network (CDN)—typically Cloudflare—cannot successfully communicate with the backend application servers that process your prompts.

While this error is frequently caused by a temporary system-wide outage on OpenAI's end, it can also be triggered by localized network disruptions, corrupted browser cache, or DNS routing issues.

Follow these troubleshooting steps in order to diagnose and resolve the ChatGPT 502 Bad Gateway error.

1. Verify OpenAI's Server Status Before modifying any local settings, check if the issue is a widespread outage on OpenAI's side. If their infrastructure is down, local troubleshooting will not work.

  • Check the Official Status Page: Visit [status.openai.com](https://status.openai.com/). Look for the "ChatGPT" section and check if there are active incidents, degraded performance, or major outages listed.
  • Monitor Community Reports: Check third-party tracking sites like Downdetector or search for "ChatGPT down" on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter). A sudden spike in reports confirms a global or regional hosting issue.

If the status page shows an active outage, you must wait for OpenAI’s engineering team to deploy a fix.

2. Perform a Hard Refresh Your browser may have cached a broken or incomplete version of the ChatGPT login page or interface. A standard refresh just reloads the page from local storage, whereas a hard refresh forces the browser to fetch a completely new copy from the servers.

  • Windows / Linux: Press Ctrl + F5 (or Ctrl + Shift + R).
  • macOS (Safari): Press Option + Cmd + E to empty the cache, then Cmd + R to reload.
  • macOS (Chrome/Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R (or hold Shift and click the Reload button).

3. Clear ChatGPT-Specific Cookies and Cache Corrupted cookies or outdated local storage items can cause continuous handshake failures with OpenAI's gateway. You do not need to clear your entire browser history; you can clear data specifically for ChatGPT.

On Google Chrome: 1. Open ChatGPT and click the **lock icon** (or tune icon) on the far left of the address bar. 2. Click on **Site settings** or **Cookies and site data**. 3. Click **Manage on-device site data** or **Clear data**. 4. Delete all listed files for `chatgpt.com` and `openai.com`. 5. Restart your browser and attempt to log in again.

On Mozilla Firefox: 1. Click the **padlock icon** to the left of the URL. 2. Click **Clear cookies and site data**. 3. Click **Remove** to confirm.

4. Toggle VPNs and Proxy Servers Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and proxy servers change your routing paths. Cloudflare’s security protocols, which protect OpenAI, often flag public VPN IP addresses if they exhibit high request rates. This flagging can result in a 502 Bad Gateway error.

  1. Temporarily disconnect your VPN or disable any active proxy extensions in your browser.
  2. Reload the ChatGPT tab.
  3. If ChatGPT loads, reconnect your VPN and switch to a different server location or region to avoid bad routing nodes.

5. Flush Your DNS Cache If OpenAI recently updated their server IP addresses to route around an outage, your computer might still be attempting to connect to an old, inactive IP address stored in your local DNS cache.

On Windows: 1. Press the **Windows Key**, type `cmd`, and press Enter to open the Command Prompt. 2. Type the following command and press Enter: `ipconfig /flushdns` 3. You should see a message confirming the DNS Resolver Cache was successfully flushed.

On macOS: 1. Open **Terminal** (via Spotlight Search or Applications > Utilities). 2. Type the following command and press Enter: `sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder` 3. Enter your Mac’s administrator password when prompted.

6. Switch Network Connections To rule out a local network routing block or a DNS issue with your Internet Service Provider (ISP), try testing the connection on an entirely different network.

  • Disable Wi-Fi on your mobile device and try accessing ChatGPT via your cellular data network.
  • If ChatGPT loads normally over cellular, your home or office router may be caching bad route configurations. Power cycle your router by unplugging its power cord for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in.

When to Escalate If you have completed all the steps above, confirmed that OpenAI's status page lists all systems as operational, and still receive a 502 error across multiple devices on different networks, the issue is likely a localized regional server node error on OpenAI's distribution network.

In this scenario, wait 30 to 60 minutes for DNS servers and CDNs to sync. If the error persists for over 24 hours, visit [help.openai.com](https://help.openai.com/) and use the chat widget in the bottom-right corner to open a support ticket.
