ChatGPT Down Right Now? How to Fix Connection Issues

Updated 10/13/2026

When ChatGPT suddenly stops responding, fails to load, or throws server errors like 500, 502, or 503, it can halt your entire workflow. This troubleshooting guide walks you through diagnosing whether ChatGPT is experiencing a global outage and how to resolve local browser, credential, or network conflicts that mimic an outage.

1. Verify the global OpenAI system status Before trying complex technical fixes on your machine, check if the problem is on OpenAI’s side.

  • Check the official status page: Go to status.openai.com. This dashboard displays real-time operational status for ChatGPT, the API, playground, and billing systems. Look for active incidents, past incidents, or scheduled maintenance windows.
  • Monitor third-party outage trackers: Sites like Downdetector aggregate user-reported outages. If you see a massive spike in reports within the last 15 minutes, the platform is likely facing a widespread infrastructure issue.
  • Check community hubs: Search "ChatGPT down" on X (formerly Twitter) or visit the OpenAI Discord server. If thousands of users are reporting the same behavior, wait it out. OpenAI’s engineering team is likely already working on a hotfix.

2. Perform a hard reload and clear site data If the official status page shows "All Systems Operational" but ChatGPT won't load for you, corrupted cache or cookies are the most common culprits. A standard refresh doesn't clear these files.

  1. Force a hard refresh:
  2. Chrome/Firefox/Edge on Windows: Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
  3. Safari/Chrome on Mac: Press Cmd + Shift + R or hold Shift and click the Reload icon.
  4. Clear cookies and site data for ChatGPT only:
  5. You do not need to clear your entire browser history, which would log you out of all other accounts.
  6. In Chrome, click the padlock or settings icon to the left of chatgpt.com in your address bar.
  7. Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  8. Click Manage on-device site data and delete the data associated with OpenAI and ChatGPT.
  9. Restart your browser and attempt to log back in.

3. Diagnose and bypass HTTP 500, 502, and 503 errors These errors mean the communication path between your computer and OpenAI's origin servers is disrupted:

  • 500 Internal Server Error: A generic error indicating the server encountered an unexpected condition. Try using a different browser or logging out and back in.
  • 502 Bad Gateway / 503 Service Unavailable: The server is overloaded or undergoing maintenance and cannot handle your request. This often happens during peak usage hours when demand spikes.
  • The Fix: If you are using a VPN, turn it off. OpenAI frequently blocks or throttles traffic originating from known VPN IP ranges to prevent scraping and abuse. If you are not on a VPN, try switching from your current Wi-Fi network to a mobile hotspot to see if your ISP's DNS routing is causing the gateway failure.

4. Test in an Incognito or Private window Browser extensions—especially ad blockers, privacy guards, script blockers, or translation tools—can interfere with the WebSocket connections ChatGPT uses to stream text generation.

  1. Open an Incognito (Chrome), Private (Firefox/Safari), or InPrivate (Edge) window.
  2. Go to chatgpt.com and log in.
  3. If ChatGPT works perfectly in this environment, a browser extension is blocking the connection in your main profile.
  4. To identify the culprit, return to your main browser window, disable your extensions one by one, and reload ChatGPT after disabling each one.

5. Flush your local DNS cache Outdated local DNS records can route your connection to an outdated or offline OpenAI server node, resulting in loading loops.

  • On Windows: Open Command Prompt as Administrator, type ipconfig /flushdns, and press Enter.
  • On macOS: Open Terminal, type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder, press Enter, and enter your system password.
  • Change DNS Servers: If flushing doesn't work, consider changing your device's DNS servers to a reliable public resolver, such as Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1).

When to escalate If OpenAI's status page indicates green/operational status, you have completed all the steps above, and ChatGPT still shows blank responses, fails to load, or displays persistent 5xx errors across multiple devices (desktop, phone, and different networks), escalate the issue:

  1. Navigate to help.openai.com.
  2. Click the chat bubble in the bottom right corner to start a conversation with the automated helper.
  3. Type "Technical support" and select "ChatGPT not working" to log your issue.
  4. If you are a ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise subscriber, highlight your subscription status in the support ticket to receive prioritized assistance.
