ChatGPT Error 500: How to Fix Internal Server Errors

Updated 10/2/2026

An HTTP 500 Internal Server Error on ChatGPT means that OpenAI’s servers have encountered an unexpected condition that prevents them from fulfilling your request. While this error is primarily a server-side issue, localized browser conflicts, stale session cookies, and network routing anomalies can also trigger it on your device.

If you are blocked by a "500 Internal Server Error" message or find that the application suddenly crashes mid-conversation, follow this step-by-step guide to diagnose and resolve the issue.

1. Check OpenAI’s System Status

Before changing any local settings, verify whether the problem is on OpenAI's side. If there is a major outage, local troubleshooting steps will not work.

  1. Go to the official [OpenAI Status Page](https://status.openai.com/).
  2. Look at the chat.openai.com (or ChatGPT) component status.
  3. Scroll down to the Past Incidents section to see if engineers are actively investigating a server-side outage or database degradation.

If the status page indicates an active incident or partial outage, you must wait for OpenAI to deploy a fix.

2. Perform a Hard Refresh

Your browser may have cached a broken state of the ChatGPT interface. A standard refresh (F5 or the reload button) often loads the page back from your local cache instead of requesting a clean copy from the server.

  • On Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
  • On Mac (Safari, Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R (or hold Shift and click the reload icon in Safari).

If the interface loads correctly after a hard refresh, your previous session was likely hung up on a temporary server hiccup.

3. Clear ChatGPT Site Data and Cookies

Corrupted session cookies frequently trigger 500 errors during authentication handshakes. Instead of wiping your entire browser history, you can clear data specifically for ChatGPT.

On Google Chrome: 1. Click the **tune/padlock icon** to the left of `chatgpt.com` in the address bar. 2. Select **Site settings** or **Cookies and site data**. 3. Click **Manage on-device site data** or click the trash icon next to the stored cookies. 4. Click **Clear** and reload the tab.

On Mozilla Firefox: 1. Click the **lock icon** to the left of the URL. 2. Click **Clear cookies and site data**. 3. Click **Remove** to confirm.

Log back into your OpenAI account and attempt to start a new chat.

4. Test in an Incognito/Private Window

Third-party browser extensions—especially ad blockers, script blockers, translation tools, and custom ChatGPT prompt managers—frequently interfere with ChatGPT's background API calls.

  1. Open a new Incognito or Private Browsing window.
  2. Navigate directly to https://chatgpt.com.
  3. Log in to your account.

If ChatGPT works flawlessly in private mode, one of your browser extensions is causing the 500 error. Disable your extensions one by one in your primary window to isolate the culprit.

5. Toggle or Change Your VPN Connection

OpenAI utilizes Cloudflare and other web application firewalls to protect its infrastructure from automated traffic and DDoS attacks. If your VPN or proxy server is routing through an IP address that has been flagged for suspicious activity, the edge server may drop your connection with a 500 error.

  1. Temporarily disconnect your VPN.
  2. Refresh the ChatGPT tab and test.
  3. If you must use a VPN, change your connection protocol or switch to a different country/city server location.

6. Switch to an Alternative Network or Device

Local network configurations, restrictive firewall policies (common on corporate, school, or public Wi-Fi networks), and custom DNS settings can block the specific WebSockets or API endpoints that ChatGPT relies on.

  1. Turn off your Wi-Fi and connect your computer to a mobile hotspot, or open ChatGPT on your phone using cellular data.
  2. If the mobile app or mobile browser works, your primary Wi-Fi network's DNS or firewall is blocking traffic to OpenAI.
  3. Consider switching your router or computer's DNS servers to a public resolver like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1).

When to Escalate

If you have completed all the steps above, confirmed that the OpenAI status page is green, and still receive a 500 Internal Server Error across multiple devices and networks, the issue may be isolated to your specific OpenAI account database entry.

To escalate this to OpenAI technical support, visit the [OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/) and click the chat widget in the bottom-right corner. Provide them with your account email, the device/browser you are using, and a screenshot of the 500 error code.
