ChatGPT Google Sign In Not Working: How to Fix

Updated 10/8/2026

Logging into ChatGPT using a Google account is convenient, but connection timeouts, API glitches, or cookie mismatches can block you. When the "Continue with Google" button spins infinitely or redirects you back to the login screen, the issue is usually cached credentials or blocked script execution. Use this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to resolve the Google sign-in failure on ChatGPT and restore access to your account.

1. Check for OpenAI and Google Authentication Outages

Before modifying local settings, verify that the issue is not server-side. OpenAI uses third-party authentication protocols (OAuth) to handle Google logins. If either OpenAI's authentication servers or Google's identity services are down, your login will fail.

  1. Visit status.openai.com and look at the "API" and "Chat" uptime metrics, focusing on login and authentication components.
  2. Check third-party tracking sites like Downdetector for reported outages with Google Accounts or Gmail services.
  3. If an outage is active, wait for the engineering teams to deploy a fix; local troubleshooting will not bypass server-side issues.

2. Clear Google OAuth Cookies and Site Data

Corrupted cookies and cached session tokens are the most common causes of Google login failures. Your browser may be attempting to use an expired authentication token to log in.

  1. Open your browser settings.
  2. Search for Cookies and site data (or navigate to "Privacy and security" depending on your browser).
  3. Click on Manage site data or See all cookies and site data.
  4. Type openai into the search bar and click Delete all shown or the trash icon next to auth.openai.com and chat.openai.com.
  5. Type google in the search bar and clear cookies associated with accounts.google.com (note: this may log you out of other Google services temporarily).
  6. Restart your browser, navigate back to ChatGPT, and attempt to sign in again.

3. Disable Ad Blockers and Privacy Shields

Aggressive privacy extensions, built-in browser shields, or ad blockers frequently block the background scripts required for Google OAuth to communicate with OpenAI.

  1. If you are using Brave, click the shield icon in the address bar and turn off Shields active for chat.openai.com.
  2. For Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, temporarily disable extensions like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, or AdBlock Plus.
  3. Disable any VPN or proxy connections, as security systems might flag the sudden change in IP address during OAuth handshake as suspicious.
  4. Reload the ChatGPT login page and try clicking Continue with Google again.

4. Switch to an Private Window or Alternative Browser

Testing with a clean profile helps isolate browser-specific issues from network or account-level blockages.

  1. Open a new Incognito (Chrome), Private (Firefox/Safari), or InPrivate (Edge) window.
  2. Navigate directly to chat.openai.com.
  3. Attempt to sign in with your Google account.
  4. If this works, the issue resides within your main browser profile's extensions, corrupted cache, or strict tracking protection settings. You may need to reset your primary browser to factory defaults.

5. Convert to an Email and Password Login

If the Google OAuth bridge remains broken, you can bypass third-party authentication completely by establishing a direct email and password login for the same account.

  1. Go to the ChatGPT login page.
  2. Do not click "Continue with Google." Instead, enter your Gmail address associated with that Google account into the main email field and click Continue.
  3. On the password entry screen, click Forgot password?.
  4. Open your Gmail inbox and find the password reset email sent by OpenAI.
  5. Click the link inside the email to set a strong, unique password.
  6. Return to the ChatGPT login page, enter your Gmail address, and log in using the newly created password instead of the Google OAuth button.

When to Escalate

If you have converted your login method or cleared your cache and still receive access errors (such as "Account deactivated" or "Authentication failed"), the problem is likely an account-level block. You must contact OpenAI Support directly. Open the help widget at help.openai.com and explain that your Google sign-in is failing even after clearing cookies and attempting password conversion. Do not share your login password with support agents.
